Purple Knights rout Mavericks; Ravens race past Spartans
COLCHESTER, Vt.- The Saint Michael's and Franklin Pierce women's basketball teams swept their opening weekend East Coast Conference opponents, Saint Thomas Aquinas and Mercy. The Purple Knights capped off the weekend with a 78-58 win over the Mavericks on Sunday evening. The Ravens made quick work of the Spartans, running away with a 76-53 victory.
In their second win of the year, Saint Michael's was led by sophomore forward Michelle Otey (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Reg.), who recorded a double-double on 16 points and 13 rebounds. Junior center Anna Florent (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider) upped her season average to 14.5 points per game with 19 points and eight rebounds on the night. Sophomore guard Alexis Keller (Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan) chipped in 13 points to help the Purple Knights remain undefeated on the season.
For Mercy, junior guard Jazmin Steele (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) scored a game-high 20 points on 6-11 shooting from the field. Sophomore guard Samantha DeVore (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) and junior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, N.Y./Tuxedo) each had 12 points in the team's second loss in as many days.
In the first game, sophomore guard Johannah Leedham (Ellesmere, England/Cheshire Academy), was two assists shy of a triple-double, registered 21 points, 12 boards, eight assists and four steals to help Franklin Pierce to a convincing 23-point win over Saint Thomas Aquinas. Junior guard Jennifer Leedham (Ellesmere, England/Cheshire Academy) added 12 points, eight board and six assists, while junior guard Vanessa Power (Mildura, Australia/St. Joseph's) dropped 14 points on 5-7 shooting from the field. Franklin Pierce held the advantage on points off turnovers 19-4.
Saint Thomas Aquinas fell behind early and could not make up the difference after falling behind by 14 at the half. Junior forward Claire Wilson (Boonton, N.J./Morris Catholic) led the Spartans with 13 points and eight rebounds. Senior guard Takiyah Ingram (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) scored 11 points while grabbing eight rebounds and five steals.
Saint Michael's tips off again on Tuesday, November 20 at the University of Massachusetts Lowell at 5:30 p.m. to commence Northeast-10 Conference play.
