COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's swimming & diving team completed its regular season with a 118-90 victory over Saint Lawrence University on Sunday during Senior Day in the Ross Sports Center natatorium. The Purple Knights ended up 3-6 with their most wins since 2009-10, downing the 1-5 Saints for the third time in seven years after four of the most recent six meets had been decided by four points or less.
The Purple Knight women finish the dual meet portion of their schedule at 8-4 after taking a 137-97 setback against 5-1 Saint Lawrence. Saint Michael's registered its highest win total since 1996-97 this winter.
Senior Spencer Ralston (Hebron, Conn./Cushing Academy) and sophomores Connor Hopkins (Windham, N.H./Windham) and Aidan Mulderrig (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) all won three events, including joining first-year Payton Stewart (Keene, N.H./Keene) to capture the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:32.39).
Ralston won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.95) and 500 free (5:03.04), registering all three of his wins during the final three swimming events of the meet. Hopkins won the 50 free (22.12) and 100 free (49.56), and Mulderrig topped the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.17) and 1,000 free (10:54.39) races. First-year Dan Fortier (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) earned the first individual victory of his college career in the 100-yard butterfly (56.79), followed by Stewart in second. Stewart was also the 200 free runner-up.
Fortier sided with senior Michael May (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall) and juniors Brandon Bielinski (Windham, N.H./Windham) and Jacob Sutton (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro) to win the 200-yard medley relay, with Bielinski and May capturing their initial college victories in the process, with May doing so in his final dual meet. May finished second in the 200-yard individual medley, having trailed by just 0.61 seconds following the third leg, and took third in the 100 breast but came within 0.41 ticks of the runner-up.
Junior Patty Kohn (Weston, Conn./Greenwich) earned two of the women's team's three victories, including claiming the 200 free (2:02.40) by 0.13 seconds after out-touching a Saint at the wall. During the 200 medley relay (1:56.78), she joined senior Theresa Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) and sophomores Lauren Giampietro (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) and Sarah White (Lakeville, Mass./Apponequet Regional) for a triumph. Kohn was second in the 500 free, besting the third-place finisher by only 0.11 seconds.
Senior Genevieve Gigandet (Groveland, Mass./Central Catholic) claimed the first one-meter diving event (136.43) before taking second in the second, coming within 12.53 points of the winner. With 14 wins this winter, she has the most by a Purple Knight diver since Jade Lubeck '13 posted the same figure in 2009-10, as that total could not have been exceeded any more recently than the 1990s.
Giampietro placed second in both the 100 breast and 200 IM, losing the former by only 0.32 ticks, while Murphy took second in the 100 fly, with White just 0.55 seconds behind in third. White was on the runner-up 200 free relay, which fell by only 0.32 seconds, as she joined senior Coral Santos (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy), junior Elizabeth Doherty (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) and first-year Kristin Burlew (Springfield, Vt./Hartford). Doherty was second in the 50 free, with Santos 0.35 seconds back in third. Senior Sammy Sidorakis (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) placed third in the 100 back but was within 0.42 seconds of second place.
Gigandet, May, Murphy, Ralston, Santos and Sidorakis were all honored during a special ceremony in the middle of their final college home event as part of Senior Day. The Purple Knights break until Feb. 8-11, when they compete in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).
