COLCHESTER, Vt. - Behind 12 event victories, the Saint Michael's College women's swimming & diving team downed Norwich University, 140-112, on Thursday in the Ross Sports Center natatorium for its third straight win. The Purple Knights, who won their 17th consecutive series meeting, are 8-3, while the Cadets slipped to 1-8. The Purple and Gold men, now 2-6, lost a 174-102 decision against 6-3 Norwich.
Junior Patty Kohn's (Weston, Conn./Greenwich) four victories paced Saint Michael's, as she topped the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.11) and 1,000-yard freestyle (11:46.43) events while swimming legs for a pair of winning relays. In the 200 free relay (1:51.02), she joined senior Coral Santos (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy), junior Elizabeth Doherty (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) and sophomore Sarah White (Lakeville, Mass./Apponequet Regional). The winning 200-yard medley relay quartet (2:00.70) was comprised of Kohn, White, senior Theresa Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) and sophomore Lauren Giampietro (Watertown, Conn./Watertown).
White won the 100 free (59.80), with Doherty taking second, while White was the 50 back runner-up. Giampietro captured the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.94) and 100-yard butterfly (1:08.43), edging the second-place Santos by 0.02 seconds. Murphy won the 50 fly (28.79), and senior Genevieve Gigandet (Groveland, Mass./Central Catholic) topped both one-meter diving events, with 170.35 and 144.35 points.
Senior Sammy Sidorakis (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) topped the 200 free (2:08.81) while placing second in the 100 back, while first-year Meg Geschwind (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) won the 500 free (5:46.13). Sophomore Reiley Adelson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) was second in the 200 and 500 free races, while Doherty took second in the 50 free. First-year Kristin Burlew (Springfield, Vt./Hartford) took second in the 50 breast and 200-yard individual medley, losing the 50 breast race by just 0.02 seconds.
Sophomore Connor Hopkins (Windham, N.H./Windham) claimed four wins during the men's portion of the meet, including taking the 50 back (26.08), 50 free (22.19) and 100 back (56.38) events. During the 200 medley relay (1:43.36), he sided with senior Spencer Ralston (Hebron, Conn./Cushing Academy) and first-years Dan Fortier (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) and Payton Stewart (Keene, N.H./Keene). Stewart rallied the foursome to victory, entering the pool for the anchor leg trailing by 0.50 seconds before winning by 0.18 ticks.
Ralston won the 200 free (1:52.36) and 500 free (5:10.52) races while taking second in the 50 breast, and Fortier finished as the 100 fly runner-up. During the 50 fly, Stewart claimed second, with Fortier just 0.11 seconds behind in third. Junior Tim Kinville (Colchester, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) was third during the second one-meter diving competition but came within 1.95 points of second.
The Purple Knights conclude their regular-season schedule by hosting Saint Lawrence University on Sunday for Senior Day at 1 p.m.
