Women's Swimming & Diving Defeats Saint Rose for First Time in 11 Years

TROY, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College women's swimming & diving team downed The College of Saint Rose, 128-93, for the first time in 11 years on Sunday at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's (RPI) Robison Pool to secure its seventh victory, the Purple Knights' most in 21 seasons. Now 7-3, Saint Michael's had last defeated the 3-5 Golden Knights in 2006-07. The Purple and Gold men are 2-5 after a 132-78 setback to 4-4 Saint Rose.

Senior diver Genevieve Gigandet (Groveland, Mass./Central Catholic) was the lone multi-event winner for Saint Michael's, which has its most victories in a season since going 9-7 in 1996-97. Gigandet tied her career high with 11 triumphs this winter, with two dual meets and the Northeast-10 Conference Championship still remaining, as she captured the one- (179.02) and three-meter (114.05) diving competitions on Sunday.

The deep Purple Knights knocked off Saint Rose despite only five wins thanks to 10 runner-up showings. Seniors Theresa Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) and Sammy Sidorakis (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) and junior Patty Kohn (Weston, Conn./Greenwich) all notched one win among their three top-three performances.

Kohn captured the 200-yard freestyle (2:05.13), took second in the 100-yard backstroke, and joined Murphy and sophomores Lauren Giampietro (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) and Sarah White (Lakeville, Mass./Apponequet Regional) on the second-place 400-yard medley relay foursome. Murphy topped the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.42) and sided with Sidorakis, junior Elizabeth Doherty (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) and first-year Kristin Burlew (Springfield, Vt./Hartford) on the runner-up 400 free relay. Sidorakis won the 100 free (59.05), holding off the second-place White by 0.27 seconds, while coming in second to Kohn during the 200 free.

Giampietro touched the wall second during the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley, while first-year Meg Geschwind (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) claimed second during the 500 and 1,000 free races. During the 50 free, White was the runner-up, while Doherty trailed by only 0.12 seconds and settled for third.

Senior Spencer Ralston (Hebron, Conn./Cushing Academy) and sophomore Connor Hopkins (Windham, N.H./Windham) both pushed their career-high win totals to a team-best 19 on Sunday, with Ralston winning twice to lead the men. He took the 500 (5:03.86) and 1,000 (10:26.21) free events, trimming 8.38 seconds from his 1,000 free time from Saturday. Hopkins and Ralston joined first-years Dan Fortier (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) and Payton Stewart (Keene, N.H./Keene) on the runner-up 400 medley relay quartet.

Hopkins won the 50 free (21.99) and placed second during the 100 free, and sophomore Aidan Mulderrig (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) claimed the 200 IM (2:10.44) while swimming alongside Fortier, senior Michael May (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall) and junior Jacob Sutton (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro) during a second-place showing in the 400 free relay. Stewart was second in the 200 free, Fortier nabbed second during the 100 fly, and junior Tim Kinville (Colchester, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) took second in both diving events.

Both Purple Knight squads host in-state rival Norwich University on Thursday at 5 p.m.
