Shea breaks 200 IM school record, highlights Purple Knights' second day at NE-10 meet

WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior Julie Shea (Peabody, Mass./Peabody Veterans Memorial/Assumption) twice broke a school record in the 200-yard individual medley on Friday as the Saint Michael's College men's and women's swimming & diving teams competed at day two of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship in Worcester Polytechnic Institute's (WPI) Sports & Recreation Center.

Midway through the four-day meet, the women stand seventh among nine schools with 115 points, holding off eighth-place Adelphi University by 16 points. The men are sixth out of seven with 95 points, standing 12.5 ahead of Adelphi. Action resumes on Saturday with the 10:15 a.m. trials before finals races kick off at 6 p.m.

Shea broke junior Lindsay McNall's (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) year-old 200 IM program mark during the morning trials, lowering McNall's standard of 2:16.58 by nearly two seconds, to 2:14.64. Shea placed eighth in the prelims to qualify for the evening championship race, where she touched the wall in seventh place while trimming her mark to a new record of 2:14.02. Shea also claims the 100-yard breaststroke program mark as her own, doing so as a junior.

First-year Pat Thornton (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) also qualified for an evening finals race, taking 14th in both the morning and evening runs of the men's 500-yard freestyle. His time of 4:55.45 during the consolation final was just 1.71 seconds shy off Andrew Marshall's '13 three-year-old school record. Thornton aided another near-record performance, as his team's top 400-yard medley relay quartet took 3:46.16 during a seventh-place showing, within 2.96 seconds of a mark set earlier this year. He joined junior Ryan Butler (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) and sophomores Joe Carroll (Andover, Mass./Andover) and Zach Kosakowski (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) during the race.

Shea also swam for a seventh-place 400 medley relay foursome, siding with first-years Tess Grimaldi (Higganum, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth), Shannon Kelley (Jefferson, Mass./Wachusett Regional) and Patty Kohn (Weston, Conn./Greenwich) for a time of 4:11.09. The B foursome of junior Cymantha Rogers (Swampscott, Mass./Swampscott), sophomores Theresa Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) and Sammy Sidorakis (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) and first-year Elizabeth Doherty (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) nabbed 16th.

The men's 400 medley relay B team of senior Chad Phalon (Wantage, N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional), junior Stephen Andersen (Concord, N.H./Concord), sophomore Spencer Ralston (Hebron, Conn./Cushing Academy) and first-year Seamus Butler (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) combined to place 14th.

During the morning trials, Kohn clocked in at 5:19.11 during the 500 free, missing qualifying for the consolation final by 0.15 seconds. Grimaldi finished the 50 free in 25.98, just 0.19 ticks short of the last B final swimmer, and sophomore Genevieve Gigandet (Groveland, Mass./Central Catholic) netted 266.95 points to come within 29.70 of the final competitor for the evening one-meter diving event.
