Pair of records nearly fall as Saint Michael's begins competition at NE-10 Championship

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College men's and women's swimming & diving teams neared a pair of school records on Thursday during day one of the four-day Northeast-10 Conference Championship at Worcester Polytechnic Institute's (WPI) Sports & Recreation Center. Following an abbreviated evening session, the women stand seventh out of nine schools with 66 points, holding off eighth-place Adelphi University (60), while the men are fifth among seven at 58.

Action resumes on Friday with the 10:15 a.m. trials before finals races kick off at 6 p.m.

During the 200-yard medley relay, the opening event of the championship, the Purple Knight women's A team clocked in at 1:51.75, leaving the quartet just 0.38 seconds shy of a four-year-old school record. Senior Julie Shea (Peabody, Mass./Peabody Veterans Memorial/Assumption), sophomore Theresa Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield), and first-years Tess Grimaldi (Higganum, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) and Patty Kohn (Weston, Conn./Greenwich) completed legs during their seventh-place showing.

On the men's side, sophomore Zach Kosakowski (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and first-years Seamus Butler (Waltham, Mass./Waltham), Benjamin Guilmette (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) and Ryan Kirkpatrick (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) took sixth in the 200 medley relay at 1:41.90, falling 1.02 seconds short of a school mark set last year. Kosakowski was a member of that record-breaking foursome.

In the 800-yard freestyle relay, the only other event contested on Thursday, the Purple Knight men took sixth, with Guilmette, Kirkpatrick and Kosakowski joining first-year Pat Thornton (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) to combine for a time of 7:29.06. The women's A team, which finished eighth at 8:26.35, was comprised of Kohn, Shea, senior Catherine Tierney (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) and sophomore Sammy Sidorakis (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker).

Sophomore Spencer Ralston (Hebron, Conn./Cushing Academy) aided a pair of B relays for the men, lending a hand to the 14th-place 800 free foursome, where he joined junior Ryan Butler (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) and sophomores Joe Carroll (Andover, Mass./Andover) and Jake Fox (Cranston, R.I./Bishop Hendricken). During a 15th-place 200 medley relay performance, Ralston sided with senior Chad Phalon (Wantage, N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional), junior Sean Glasheen (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) and sophomore Michael May (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall).

Senior Luci Franklin (Steamboat Springs, Colo./Lowell Whiteman School), junior Cymantha Rogers (Swampscott, Mass./Swampscott) and sophomore Coral Santos (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy) all swam for the 16th-place 200 medley and 800 free quartets. Sidorakis completed the 200 medley foursome, while first-year Shannon Kelley (Jefferson, Mass./Wachusett Regional) finished off the 800 free squad.
