WALTHAM, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College men's and women's swimming & diving teams continued a three-meet week with losses at Bentley University in the Dana Center pool on Wednesday. The 3-3 women slipped to the 7-1 Falcons by a 167-117 count, while the Purple and Gold's 1-4 men dropped a 189-78 decision to 4-4 Bentley.
Four Purple Knights won events, including a trio of women in senior Julie Shea (Peabody, Mass./Peabody Veterans Memorial/Assumption), junior Lindsay McNall (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) and first-year Patty Kohn (Weston, Conn./Greenwich). Shea won the 50-yard breaststroke in 32.41, while Kohn captured the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 29.69. During the 50-yard butterfly, McNall touched the wall in 28.33, within 0.45 seconds of her own school record, while second-place sophomore Theresa Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) was 0.40 ticks shy of McNall and first-year Shannon Kelley (Jefferson, Mass./Wachusett Regional) 0.24 seconds short of Murphy en route to third place.
Shea was also second in the 200 breast, while Kohn placed third in the 100- and 500-yard freestyles, and the duo joined McNall and sophomore Sammy Sidorakis (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) to finish second in the 400 free relay. Shea notched a fourth top-two placement by helping a 200-yard medley relay squad finish second, siding with McNall, Murphy and first-year Tess Grimaldi (Higganum, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth). McNall took third in the 1,000 free.
Murphy was the 200 fly runner-up, followed by senior Zoe Doucette (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) and sophomore Coral Santos (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy) in the next two positions, while Grimaldi nabbed second and Kelley third during the 50 free. Kelley was fourth in the 200 free. Sidorakis claimed second in the 200 back and fourth during the 50 back, while senior Luci Franklin (Steamboat Springs, Colo./Lowell Whiteman School) took third in the 400-yard individual medley and fourth in both the 200 back and 1,000 free. First-year Allison Plummer (Bath, Maine/Morse) was fourth in the 400 IM - 0.48 seconds short of Franklin - and the 200 breast, while Santos was fourth in the 500 free.
Sophomore Genevieve Gigandet (Groveland, Mass./Central Catholic) scored fourth-place points in both the one- and three-meter diving events, while Kelley, Sidorakis, senior Theresa Barsanti (Saratoga, Calif./Saint Lawrence Academy) and first-year Elizabeth Doherty (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) combined to place fourth in the 200 medley relay.
Sophomore Zach Kosakowski (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) won the 50 breast in 30.10 and placed third in the 200 back, while first-year Seamus Butler (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) and sophomore Michael May (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall) placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 50 breast. Kosakowski also helped a pair of relay quartets place fifth, first joining junior Ryan Butler (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) and first-years Ryan Kirkpatrick (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) and Pat Thornton (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) during the 200 medley. Ryan Butler, Thornton and sophomore Joe Carroll (Andover, Mass./Andover) rounded out the fifth-place 400 free relay foursome.
Thornton was second in the 200 fly - followed by junior Sean Glasheen (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) in fifth - and fifth during the 500 free, while Ryan Butler finished third in the 100 free and fifth in the 200 free. Kirkpatrick placed fourth during the 50 fly and fifth in the 100 free, May took fourth in the 200 breast, and Seamus Butler contributed fifth-place performances in the 50 free and 200 breast. Carroll was fourth in the 50 back and fifth during the 400 IM, while sophomore Spencer Ralston (Hebron, Conn./Cushing Academy) and senior Chad Phalon (Wantage, N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional) claimed third and fourth, respectively, during the 1,000 free race.
The Purple Knights are back home to face Saint Lawrence University on Sunday at 1 p.m.
