Men's swimming & diving takes second at North Country Invite, women near repeat

POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College men's swimming & diving team took second among five schools at the State University of New York at Potsdam's two-day North Country Invitational, which came to an end on Saturday in the Maxcy Hall Pool, while the Purple Knight women finished third but were four points short of the champion.

During the teams' final event of the semester, the Saint Michael's men totaled 362 points to hold off third-place Monroe Community College (359). Clarkson University won with 468 points, while the Purple Knights posted their best finish in four years of attending the meet. On the women's side, the defending-champion Purple and Gold totaled 397 points to end the weekend just short of runner-up Clarkson (399) and winner Monroe (401).

Sophomore Zach Kosakowski's (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) third victory of the weekend highlighted the men's portion of the meet, as he topped the 100-yard backstroke field (56.72) by 3.04 seconds. Classmate Joe Carroll (Andover, Mass./Andover) finished fourth at 1:01.75, just 0.26 seconds out of third. Kosakowski was also fourth in the 400-yard individual medley (4:48.02) while leading off for the fourth-place 200-yard medley relay quartet (1:45.66), which came within 0.06 ticks of third. First-years Seamus Butler (Waltham, Mass./Waltham), Ryan Kirkpatrick (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) and Pat Thornton (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) rounded out the foursome.

Thornton was second in both the 200-yard butterfly (2:08.93) and 1,650-yard freestyle (18:19.75), with sophomore Spencer Ralston (Hebron, Conn./Cushing Academy) fourth in the latter (19:43.07). Kirkpatrick, Kosakowski and Thornton joined first-year Benjamin Guilmette (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) to take fourth in the 400 free relay (3:27.51), while Guilmette clocked in at 51.55 during the 100 free to edge out Kirkpatrick for fifth by 0.19 seconds.

First-year Patty Kohn (Weston, Conn./Greenwich) recorded her second solo triumph of the invitational by finishing first in the 100 back (1:03.48), trimming the runner-up by 0.30 seconds. Sophomore Sammy Sidorakis (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) clocked in at 1:07.68, just 0.25 ticks out of fifth place. Kohn and Sidorakis swam legs for the runner-up 400 free relay quartet (3:56.26), joining sophomore Katherine Lecce (Falls Church, Va./Saint Margaret's School) and first-year Shannon Kelley (Jefferson, Mass./Wachusett Regional).

Kelley and Kohn sided with junior Cymantha Rogers (Swampscott, Mass./Swampscott) and sophomore Theresa Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) to claim third in the 200 medley relay (2:00.94), while Murphy took third in the 200 fly (2:41.60), with senior Zoe Doucette (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) fifth (2:50.78). At 59.75, Lecce was 0.25 seconds short of fifth place in the 100 free, and Kelley was 0.40 ticks away. Sophomore Genevieve Gigandet (Groveland, Mass./Central Catholic) finished third in the one-meter diving (150.45), just 8.0 points behind the runner-up, and first-year Allison Plummer (Bath, Maine/Morse) was fourth in the 400 IM (5:41.71), followed by senior Luci Franklin (Steamboat Springs, Colo./Lowell Whiteman School) in fifth place (5:43.68).

The Purple Knights break until heading to The College of Saint Rose on Jan. 11 for a 4 p.m. meet.
