COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's swimming & diving team downed Merrimack College, 132-77, on Friday afternoon in the Ross Sports Center natatorium during its home opener. The Purple Knights are 2-1 on the season, while the Warriors were competing in their first dual meet of the year. Saint Michael's knocked off Merrimack for the second consecutive season, with the visitors in their second year of varsity competition.
Junior Lindsay McNall (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) and first-year Patty Kohn (Weston, Conn./Greenwich) won a team-high three events apiece. McNall captured first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.72) and 100-yard butterfly (1:01.77), with sophomore Coral Santos (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy) second in the latter. During the 400-yard freestyle relay, Kohn and McNall sided with sophomore Sammy Sidorakis (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) and first-year Shannon Kelley (Jefferson, Mass./Wachusett Regional) to win in 4:04.65.
Kohn captured the 200-yard individual medley (2:22.09) and 500 free (5:29.55) races, while first-year Allison Plummer (Bath, Maine/Morse) won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:19.84) and 1,000 free (12:57.58). Senior Theresa Barsanti (Saratoga, Calif./Saint Lawrence Academy) nabbed her first collegiate victory, touching the wall first during the 50 breast in 37.29, while Kelley took the 100 free race in 1:00.01.
In the 50 fly, sophomore Theresa Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) won in 29.39 to edge out Kelley by 0.07 seconds. First-year Tess Grimaldi (Higganum, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) topped the 50 free field at 27.41, while sophomore Katherine Lecce (Falls Church, Va./Saint Margaret's School) was 0.10 seconds behind and first-year Elizabeth Doherty (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) fell 0.12 ticks short of Lecce. Doherty also took the runner-up spot in the 1,000 free, while Lecce was second in the 100 free.
Senior Luci Franklin (Steamboat Springs, Colo./Lowell Whiteman School) placed second in the 50 back, while classmate Catherine Tierney (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) took second in the 200 free. The Purple Knights had second-place quartets in both relay races, including as Doherty, Franklin, Lecce and Tierney combined during the 400 free relay. In the 200-yard medley relay, Kohn, Lecce, McNall and Murphy clocked in 0.74 seconds out of first place.
The Purple Knight men and women host Clarkson University tomorrow at 1 p.m. for their final home meet until Jan. 17.
