Swimming & diving squads sweep Colby-Sawyer, three records fall

NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College men's and women's swimming & diving teams both downed Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday in Knight Natatorium, with each squad moving to 1-1 on the year. The Purple Knight men knocked off the 0-2 Chargers, 157-95, for their eighth straight series victory, and the Purple and Gold women extended their winning streak against 1-1 Colby-Sawyer to 10 with a 152-125 triumph.

The Saint Michael's men won eight events and combined for three records on Saturday. Sophomore Pierce Farrington (Shelburne, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) had a hand in four of those victories, including winning the 100-yard individual medley in 54.49 for his 12th career school record, eclipsing Tim McGrath's '12 nearly seven-year-old mark by 0.85 seconds. With a winning time of 1:50.58 in the 200-yard freestyle, Farrington set a pool record.

Farrington also swam for the top foursomes in the 400 free relay (3:33.97) and 400-yard medley relay (3:49.55). He sided with sophomore Zach Kosakowski (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and first-years Ryan Kirkpatrick (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) and Pat Thornton (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) during the 400 medley, with Kosakowski's time of 56.74 during the opening 100-yard backstroke leg another pool mark. In the 400 free relay, Farrington and Kosakowski joined juniors Stephen Andersen (Concord, N.H./Concord) and Ryan Butler (Waltham, Mass./Waltham).

Kosakowski claimed his third victory in the 50 back, clocking in at 26.28, while Thornton won the 100-yard butterfly (57.29) and 500 free (5:09.95). Kirkpatrick rounded out the winners in the 50 fly, touching the wall in 26.02 to beat Kosakowski by 0.14 seconds. Thornton also took second in the 200 free, while Kirkpatrick was second in the 100 IM and 50 free, losing the latter by 0.34 seconds. First-year Seamus Butler (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) was second in the 50- and 100-yard breaststrokes, Ryan Butler was the 100 free runner-up, and sophomores Joe Carroll (Andover, Mass./Andover) and Spencer Ralston (Hebron, Conn./Cushing Academy) took second in the 100 back and 1,000 free, respectively.

Junior Lindsay McNall (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) played a hand in three victories for the women, nabbing solo wins during the 100 back (1:01.39) and 50 fly (28.21), coming within 0.33 seconds of her own school record in the latter. During the 400 medley relay, McNall joined junior Cymantha Rogers (Swampscott, Mass./Swampscott) and first-years Shannon Kelley (Jefferson, Mass./Wachusett Regional) and Patty Kohn (Weston, Conn./Greenwich) to win in 4:25.04.

Kohn won the 1,000 free at 11:32.90, while sophomore Theresa Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) claimed victory in the 100 fly at 1:07.16. Sophomore Coral Santos (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy) was second in both races. Classmate Genevieve Gigandet (Groveland, Mass./Central Catholic) won both the one-meter (176.90) and three-meter (131.10) diving events, picking up the first three-meter victory of her career.

Rogers finished as the runner-up in the 50 and 100 breast races, falling 0.11 ticks shy of the 50 winner, and Kohn was second in the 100 free while joining McNall, Murphy and first-year Elizabeth Doherty (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) to place second during the 400 free relay. Doherty finished second in the 50 free, while senior Catherine Tierney (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) and sophomore Sammy Sidorakis (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W.
