MESA, Ariz. - Members of the Saint Michael's College men's and women's swimming & diving teams combined for two event victories and one school record during the eight-school Citrus Classic on Saturday at the Skyline Aquatics Center. The Purple Knights, who competed among Division II and III institutions at the non-scoring meet, had last raced on Nov. 22. Among the teams participating on Saturday was Ohio Northern University, whose men's squad was receiving votes toward the latest College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Division III national poll.
First-year Pierce Farrington (Shelburne, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) produced his fifth school record of the year on Saturday while also winning a race. Farrington topped the 100-yard freestyle field in 48.45 in addition to taking third during the 100-yard breaststroke in a school-record 1:01.84, besting Tom Wu's '06 12-year-old mark by 0.46 seconds.
Senior Nathan Paluso (Windham, Maine/Windham) placed sixth in both the 200 breast and 500 free, with junior Sean Faust (Los Angeles, Calif./Loyola) nabbing ninth in the 200 breast. Four teammates followed Paluso in the 500 free, with sophomore Riley Faszewski (Hooksett, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) seventh and first-years Jake Fox (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East), Spencer Ralston (Hebron, Conn./Cushing Academy) and Jacek Deptula (Haskell, N.J./Paramus Catholic) eighth, ninth and 10th, respectively.
First-year Zach Kosakowski (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) was sixth during the 200-yard backstroke, while first-year Joe Carroll (Andover, Mass./Andover) was seventh and junior Chad Phalon (Wantage, N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional) eighth. Kosakowski was also seventh during the 100 back at 1:03.08, with Carroll 0.67 seconds behind in eighth. Carroll, Kosakowski, Paluso and sophomore Cam Thirkell (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro) took sixth in the 400-yard medley relay. Phalon placed eighth during the 400-yard individual medley, Paluso was ninth in the 200 IM, and Thirkell notched a ninth-place performance during the 200 fly. Carroll, Deptula, Farrington and sophomore Ryan Butler (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) were eighth in the 400 free relay.
On the women's side, sophomore Lindsay McNall (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) won the 200 back at 2:13.05. She was also second in the 100 free and fourth during the 200 fly while helping a 400 medley relay foursome take third, siding with senior Steph Nadow (Charlton, Mass./Saint Peter-Marian), junior Julie Shea (Peabody, Mass./Peabody Veterans Memorial/Assumption) and sophomore Katrina Wiesner (Bow, N.H./Bow).
Shea was second in the 200 breast and third in the 100 breast at 1:15.56, coming within 0.52 seconds of second place. Senior Kim Brady (Morris Township, N.J./Academy of Saint Elizabeth) took fourth in the 50 free and fifth during the 100 free, while Wiesner tied for eighth in the 50 free and took 10th in the 100. Nadow was fifth in the 200 back, and first-year Sammy Sidorakis (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) sixth. In the 100 back, Nadow placed sixth at 1:07.32, Sidorakis was seventh in 1:07.81, and junior Luci Franklin (Steamboat Springs, Colo./Lowell Whiteman School) nabbed 10th. Sidorakis placed seventh in the 200 IM, senior Olivia Hamilton (Bourne, Mass./Bishop Stang) was seventh in the 400 IM, and Franklin took eighth in both IM races. Wiesner finished eighth in the 100 fly, and first-years Ally Fischang (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) and Theresa Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) were ninth and 10th, respectively.
First-year Betsy Portch (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) placed fourth during the 500 free, and Sidorakis was sixth. During the 200 free, Fischang placed fifth in 2:10.27, Portch was 0.45 seconds behind in sixth, and Brady was seventh. Portch also took sixth in the 200 breast, while junior Theresa Barsanti (Saratoga, Calif./Saint Lawrence Academy) was eighth and sophomore Cymantha Rogers (Swampscott, Mass./Swampscott) ninth. Fischang finished sixth in the 100 breast, with Rogers ninth. Hamilton claimed sixth during the 200 fly, and first-year Coral Santos (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy) was ninth.
Brady, Franklin, Nadow and Shea swam for the fifth-place 400 free relay quartet, while Fischang, Murphy, Portch and Rogers placed sixth. In the 400 medley relay, Rogers, Santos and first-years Amy Garlesky (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood) and Katherine Lecce (Falls Church, Va./Saint Margaret's School) nabbed eighth.
The Purple Knights return home for three of their final four regular-season meets, beginning when they host Bentley University on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
