Men's swimmers combine for five event victories at Saint Lawrence

CANTON, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College men's swimming & diving team won five events while a school record nearly fell on Sunday during a dual meet against Saint Lawrence University in Augsbury Pool. The 1-5 Saints downed the 1-6 Purple Knights, 110-107, on the men's side, while the Saint Lawrence women improved to 4-2 after picking up a 130-87 victory. Saint Michael's slipped to 3-4.

Senior Andrew Marshall (Kittery, Maine/Saint Thomas Aquinas/Saint Joseph's [Maine]) won a pair of individual races for the Purple and Gold, finishing the 500-yard freestyle in 5:19.26 and the 1,650 free at 17:52.33. In the 1,650, Marshall was 12.01 seconds shy of the program mark.

Sophomore Nathan Paluso (Windham, Maine/Windham) and first-year Sam Miller (Long Lake, N.Y./Long Lake Central School) also both won twice. Paluso was the first finisher in the 100-yard breaststroke, in 1:07.41, while Miller captured the 50 free in 23.97. For the victorious 200-yard medley relay, the duo joined junior Jack Mulderrig (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) and first-year Nick Johns (Seaford, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) to win in 1:50.49.

Paluso was also second in the 100 free, while Marshall and Miller sided with first-years Brandon MacPherson (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) and Joe Thomas (Norwood, Mass./Boston College HS) for a runner-up showing in the 200 free relay. Mulderrig claimed second in the 100-yard butterfly, Thomas was second in the 200 free, and senior Kyle Esposito (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) followed only Marshall during the 500 free, touching the wall second. Additional second-place finishers included sophomore Matt Pearson (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) in the 100 breast, classmate Joe Vo (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) in the one-meter dive, and first-year Chad Phalon (Wantage, N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional) during the 200-meter individual medley.

During the women's portion of the meet, first-year Catherine Tierney (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) was second in both the 500 and 1,650 free races, and sophomore Steph Nadow (Charlton, Mass./Saint Peter-Marian) had a runner-up showing in the 100-yard backstroke of 1:04.03 that left her 0.37 seconds short of the winner. First-year Luci Franklin (Steamboat Springs, Colo./Lowell Whiteman School) was third in the 100 back.

Franklin and Nadow joined senior Corine McAllister (South Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) and junior Julie Mullowney (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) to take second in the 200 free relay, while Franklin, Mullowney, Nadow and sophomore Kim Brady (Morris Township, N.J./Academy of Saint Elizabeth) were third in the 200 medley relay.

Brady placed third in the 50 free, Mullowney was third in the 100 breast, and sophomore Kathleen Lamontagne (Manchester, N.H./Trinity) nabbed third during both the 100 and 200 free events. Classmate Olivia Hamilton (Bourne, Mass./Bishop Stang) took third in the 100 fly.

The Purple Knights head to Norwich University on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. dual meet.

The Edmundite Catholic Liberal Arts College
