Purple Knight women vault into second place on final day of North Country Invitational

POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College women's swimming & diving team vaulted from third place into second as the six-team North Country Invitational came to an end on Saturday. The men took fifth at the event, which was hosted by the State University of New York at Potsdam in the Maxcy Hall Pool.

After being outscored on Friday by SUNY Potsdam, 153-151, the Purple Knight women held a 149-112 advantage in moving past the Bears and claiming second place with 300 total points. The men finished with 157 points, while SUNY Oneonta won the men's (584) and women's (786) competitions.

Sophomore Steph Nadow (Charlton, Mass./Saint Peter-Marian) won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:03.11, while classmate Kim Brady (Morris Township, N.H./Academy of Saint Elizabeth) took fifth. Brady, senior Corine McAllister (South Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), junior Julie Mullowney (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) and sophomore Kathleen Lamontagne (Manchester, N.H./Trinity) combined for a runner-up finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay, in 3:58.42. Mullowney was third in the 200-yard breaststroke, at 2:43.10.

Brady, McAllister, Mullowney and Nadow pushed the 200-yard medley relay to a fourth-place showing, with Brady's touch of the wall on the anchor leg completing the foursome's race in 2:01.27. First-year Ally James (Belfast, Maine/Belfast Area) was fourth in the one-meter diving event with 146.95 points.

Senior Andrew Marshall (Kittery, Maine/Saint Thomas Aquinas/Saint Joseph's [Maine]) had the best showings for the men's team, taking fourth in the 1,650 free in 17:53.32 and sixth during the 200 free at 1:56.34. Marshall joined senior Kyle Esposito (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott), sophomore Nathan Paluso (Windham, Maine/Windham) and first-year Joe Thomas (Norwood, Mass./Boston College HS) to place eighth in the 400 free relay in 3:37.55.

Thomas took eighth in the 200 free, Esposito was eighth in the 1,650 free, and sophomore Joe Vo (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) was eighth in the one-meter diving competition. Junior Derick Logan (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) notched a ninth-place showing in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:35.90, and first-year Cody Arrington (Middleton, Mass./Masconomet Regional) was ninth in the 200 breast at 2:30.27. Classmate Chad Phalon (Wantage, N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional) placed ninth in the 100 back by finishing in 1:02.70, and first-year Nick Johns (Seaford, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) was one place behind.

With their first-semester schedule now complete, the Purple Knights don't compete again until they host Bentley University for dual competitions on Jan. 9 at 1 p.m.
