COLCHESTER, Vt. (Feb. 24, 2009) ? The Saint Michael's College women's swimming and diving team broke six program records over the weekend as the Purple Knights recorded their best-ever finish at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships, hosted by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

Saint Michael's placed third out of 22 schools at the three-day meet, held Friday-Sunday. The Purple Knights finished with 523 points at the meet, 11 better than fourth-place Roger Williams University and trailing only second-place Bentley University, and champion Keene State College.

Leading the Purple Knights was freshman Eileen Mullowney (Burlington, Vt./Burlington). She lowered her own program records in three freestyle events, winning the 100-yard freestyle (53.09) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.90), and placing second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:15.54). She also swam the anchor leg of two relay squads that lowered program records: the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:45.66), and the 800-yard freestyle relay (8:15.66). Both relay teams recorded third-place finishes at the meet. For her efforts, Mullowney was named the Northeast-10 Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Freshman of the Week earlier today (Tuesday).

Classmate Katie Kelley (Jefferson, Mass./Wachusett Regional) also performed well in her first NEISDA Championship. Like Mullowney, she recorded five top-five finishes. She finished second in the 50-yard backstroke (29.12), third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.99), and fifth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:21.63). She also was part of the two freestyle relay teams with Mullowney that set new program records. She earned an NE-10 Honor Roll mention earlier today.

On the diving side, senior Tierney Carey (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) finished her career in style. She placed third out of 17 competitors in the one-meter dive at the NEISDA Championships. She finished with 358.45 points, more than 20 points higher than her preliminary score, and also garnered an NE-10 Honor Roll nod earlier today for her efforts.

The final program record that was set took place in the 400-yard medley relay (4:20.02).

In additional to its best-ever finish at the meet, Saint Michael's also was the event's recipient of the Steve Looke Sportsmanship Award. It is the first time that the Purple Knights have earned the award at the NEISDA Championships.

The Men's NEISDA Championships take place this Friday-Sunday (Feb. 27-March 1) at Roger Williams University in Newport, R.I.
