Jim Donoghue has been the men's and women's swimming coach at his alma mater since the 1998-99 season. He has coached each team for the past nine seasons after a previous shift as the men's coach from 1984-87. The women have compiled a 46-37 dual meet record under Donoghue's leadership the last nine years, inching over .500 all-time at 151-145-1, while the men have gone 33-46 since his return, and 44-69 including his three-year stint in the mid-80's.
After his initial stint at the College, he remained heavily involved in the Vermont swim scene, coaching the Twin Oaks Swim Team for seven years and now with the Green Mountain Aquatics Team, which he founded seven years ago.
During his 13 total years as head coach at Saint Michael's, his swimmers have re-written the College's record book, as over two dozen individual records have been set while more than a dozen relay records have been broken.
He is a 1970 graduate of Saint Michael's and teaches history and social studies at Burlington (Vt.) High School. Three of his four children (Greg, Rob, John, and Meghan) graduated from his alma mater.
The Donoghue family has been an important part of the Saint Michael's community for decades. Jim's father, John, was the founder of the College's Journalism department and was the director of public relations for many years and is a member of the college's Hall of Fame. He also founded the SMC sports information office during his tenure. Jim's brother, Michael, is an adjunct professor in the journalism department.
