COLCHESTER, Vt. - Eleven Saint Michael's College skiers earned United States Collegiate Ski Coaches Association (USCSCA) National Collegiate All-Academic Ski Team honors recently, being recognized for posting a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade-point average. Qualifiers must also compete at an NCAA regional championship, as six members of the Nordic team and five Alpine representatives gathered laurels after skiing at the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) Championship in late February at the Bates College Carnival.
Six members from the Nordic team were recognized, as seniors Amy Duclos (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and Mitch McDonald (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake), sophomore Emma Bellefleur (Wolfeboro, N.H./Kingswood Regional), and first-years Gaelan Boyle-Wight (Newry, Maine/Telstar Regional), Will Meehan (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle Regional) and Rachel Smith (Old Forge, N.Y./Town of Webb) each claimed the honor. This was the third time that Duclos and McDonald have been recognized with the award, Bellefleur added an honor for the second time, and Boyle-Wight, Meehan and Smith each corralled their first accolade.
Five Alpine skiers garnered recognition as senior Clara Lopez Costa (Barcelona, Spain/Green Mountain Valley School), juniors Kara Gailiunas (Warren, Vt./Green Mountain Valley School), Erin Spence (Aspen, Colo./Aspen) and Anna Willassen (Jar, Norway/Persbråten VGS), and first-year Christian Gallagher (Stowe, Vt./Burke Mountain Academy) grabbed nods. Willassen landed the honor for the third time in her career, Lopez Costa collected the accolade for the second time, and Gailiunas, Gallagher and Spence each received the award for the first time.
