COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College Alpine skiing senior Guillaume Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée Général Ferrié) was named the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) Male Alpine Skier of the Week for the Feb. 1-2 University of Vermont Carnival, the EISA announced last Friday.
Grand posted a pair of top-four showings during the UVM Carnival, taking third out of 45 competitors in the slalom at 1:49.78, coming within 0.28 seconds of the runner-up. During the giant slalom, he was fourth among 43 finishers in 2:05.60, just 0.06 ticks out of a podium spot. Thanks to his efforts in the GS, the Purple Knights also placed fourth, beating regional power University of New Hampshire by nine points.
Seven races into the carnival season, including when he took fifth in the slalom on Saturday at the Dartmouth College Carnival, Grand has reached the podium three times while placing no lower than sixth as the top Saint Michael's finisher in every competition. One of only three three-time NCAA Championship qualifiers in College history, Grand is the lone All-America skier, having done so as both a first-year and a sophomore. The three-time captain and three-time EISA All-East pick has 39 career top-10 showings in 49 starts, and has earned a spot on the podium eight times, necessitating a top-three performance.
The Purple Knights have three races coming up this weekend, beginning with two at the Middlebury College Carnival on Friday and Saturday. Competitors then head to the Dartmouth Skiway on Sunday for a GS race, which replaces the event that was canceled on Friday due to poor trail conditions as part of the Dartmouth Carnival.
