Grand Takes Second, Laffin Nabs Seventh as Alpine Skiing Opens Season in Fourth Place

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - Senior Guillaume Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée Général Ferrié) placed second in the slalom, junior Emilia Laffin (Chamonix, France/Lycée du Mont-Blanc René Dayve) was seventh, and the Saint Michael's College Alpine skiing team opened the 2019 season by taking fourth among 13 schools on the opening day of the three-day Saint Lawrence University Carnival on Friday at Whiteface Mountain.

TEAM RESULTS

  • Saint Michael's is fourth among 13 schools after day one thanks to scoring 165 points, just five short of national power University of Vermont for third. The Purple Knights are holding off Middlebury College by one point and Colby College by 13 entering Saturday's Alpine and Nordic action.
  • The Purple Knight men scored 87 points, good for third place among 13 teams, and seven short of second-place University of New Hampshire. Middlebury was fourth (83), and host Saint Lawrence took fifth at 82. The Purple and Gold bested local foe Vermont, which was seventh (63).
  • The women were sixth with 78 points, narrowly trailing Middlebury (81) and Colby (87).
  • The Saint Lawrence Carnival is the first of six competitions on this year's Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) circuit.
