HANCOCK, Mass./WOODFORD, Vt. - Junior Guillaume Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée Général Ferrié) was fourth in the giant slalom to lead four top-20 finishers on Friday, as the Saint Michael's College Alpine and Nordic skiing teams stand seventh among 16 schools following the opening day of the Williams College Carnival.
With 192 points, the Purple Knights are holding off Bates College by one point while trailing Colby College by 33 points for sixth place. Alpine events were held at Jiminy Peak, while the Nordic competition was at Prospect Mountain, marking the third time in four weeks that at least one discipline of an Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) carnival occurred in Vermont.
The Alpine squads combined for fifth-place points on Friday, with the women taking fourth, just seven points behind third-place University of New Hampshire. The men nabbed fifth but fell just 10 points shy of a three-way tie for second place.
Grand took fourth during the GS with a two-run combined time of 1:41.53, as he was 0.23 seconds removed from a podium finish. Sophomore Zach Bouchard (Merrimac, Mass./Gould Academy) placed 23rd at 1:43.87, and senior Danny Duffy (Warren, Vt./Green Mountain Valley School) took 27th in 1:44.67. Classmate Mathias Grimsrud (Stabekk, Norway/Donski Alpine) finished 35th in 1:45.78, just 0.67 seconds outside the top 30, and junior Torjus Grimsrud (Stabekk, Norway/Donski Alpine) placed 44th at 1:48.22.
On the women's side, senior Meggane Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée des métiers Ambroise Croizat) and sophomores Emilia Laffin (Chamonix, France/Lycée du Mont-Blanc René Dayve) and Anna Willassen (Jar, Norway/Persbråten VGS) were all among the top 20 in the GS for the second straight carnival. Willassen was 14th in 1:45.76, Grand nabbed 15th at 1:45.86, and Laffin placed 18th with a composite time of 1:46.05.
Senior Emma Barnes (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) led the Nordic women in 47th place during the 5K classic, crossing the finish line in 19:15.6. First-year Ale Legate (Anchorage, Alaska/West Anchorage) was 53rd in 19:42.8, and sophomore Aimee Sala (Carrabassett Valley, Maine/Kents Hill School) rounded out her team's top three in 63rd with a time of 21:07.2.
Sophomore Mitch McDonald (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) was 58th in the men's 10K classic at 37:11.7, classmate Ethan Brookner (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) placed 60th in 40:58.6, and first-year Sam Seeley (Center Harbor, N.H./Inter-Lakes) took 61st at 41:02.8.
The teams complete competition at the Williams Carnival tomorrow, with Nordic races resuming at Prospect Mountain but the Alpine slalom events taking place at Berkshire East in Charlemont, Mass.
