Men's Alpine Skiing Takes Fourth in Slalom, Saint Michael's Seventh at UVM Carnival

STOWE, Vt./CRAFTSBURY, Vt. - Junior Guillaume Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée Général Ferrié) placed seventh in the slalom on Saturday during the University of Vermont Carnival to help his Saint Michael's College men's Alpine skiing team take fourth in the discipline, and the Purple Knight Alpine and Nordic skiing squads combined for a seventh-place showing among 15 schools in the final standings.

Saint Michael's collected 387 points to edge out Bates College by five, with Dartmouth College winning the carnival with 969 points. The Alpine segment of the meet was held at Stowe Mountain Resort, while Nordic races occurred at Craftsbury Outdoor Center.

The Alpine men were fourth in the slalom with 83 points, besting Middlebury College by one but trailing the University of New Hampshire by only two points for third place. For the weekend, the Alpine men and women combined to take fourth place with 305 points, coming within 60 of third-place New Hampshire.

After standing 17th following his opening run, Grand rebounded for a seventh-place showing with a two-run time of 1:49.30. Junior Torjus Grimsrud (Stabekk, Norway/Donski Alpine) took 17th in 1:51.30, and sophomore Zach Bouchard (Merrimac, Mass./Gould Academy) was 21st at 1:53.20.

Sophomore Emilia Laffin (Chamonix, France/Lycée du Mont-Blanc René Dayve) paced the Purple Knight women during the slalom in 17th place with a time of 1:55.70, while junior transfer Clara Lopez Costa (Barcelona, Spain/Green Mountain Valley School) was 24th in 1:58.47. Sophomore Erin Spence (Aspen, Colo./Aspen) took 27th in 2:00.11, and classmate Kara Gailiunas (Warren, Vt./Green Mountain Valley School) placed 34th in 2:04.24 after starting 58th. Senior Meggane Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée des métiers Ambroise Croizat) took 35th in 2:04.56.

Senior Emma Barnes (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) paced the Purple Knights during the women's 5K classic, finishing 45th in 16:44.1. First-year Ale Legate (Anchorage, Alaska/West Anchorage) was 48th in 16:53.8, and sophomore Aimee Sala (Carrabassett Valley, Maine/Kents Hill School) crossed the finish line in 18:07.2 to place 57th. Sophomore Mitch McDonald (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) took 56th during the men's 10K classic at 30:52.9, and classmate Kevin Jeter (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) was one spot and one second behind, in 57th at 30:53.9. First-year Alex Warner (East Montpelier, Vt./U-32) nabbed 59th place at 31:13.9.

The Purple Knights squads remain close to home at the Dartmouth College Carnival next Friday and Saturday. Action begins on the opening day at 9 a.m.
