Two more historic finishes lift skiing to ninth after day two at Colby Carnival

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine/WATERVILLE, Maine - Behind two historic individual finishes on Saturday, the Saint Michael's College Alpine and Nordic skiing teams find themselves sitting ninth among 16 schools following the second day of the three-day Colby College Carnival. With 270 points, the Purple Knights are two shy of eighth-place Saint Lawrence University. Alpine events concluded for the weekend at Sugarloaf Mountain, while the first day of Nordic races began at Quarry Road Recreation Area. The final day of Nordic competition starts on Sunday at 9 a.m.

The Grand siblings both turned in top-10 performances on Saturday, as sophomore Meggane Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée des métiers Ambroise Croizat) placed seventh in the slalom to match the best finish by a Purple Knight women's Alpine skier since Megan McCarthy '05 took seventh in the 2002 Middlebury College Carnival slalom. Grand clocked in at 1:34.66 between a pair of runs, moving up from 12th after her first trek. Sophomore Molly Carolan (Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest) was 40th at 1:48.49 for the top finish in her third career carnival, and senior Nicole Cordingley (Litchfield, N.H./Campbell) earned her team's third scoring spot in 48th place thanks to a time of 2:11.06.

First-year Guillaume Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée Général Ferrié) continued his torrid start to his career, tying for fourth in the slalom with his fourth top-seven placement in as many races this winter. He finished in 1:30.46. Senior Kevin Krone (Copper Mountain, Colo./Summit) notched a 21st-place showing in 1:33.49 as the only other Purple Knight male to complete two runs. Despite only having two scorers, men's Alpine netted sixth-place points among 13 schools.

Sophomore Emma Barnes (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) posted her second top-30 final in the last two weeks, taking 27th during the mass-start 15K classic with a time of 53:35.2. That placement was the best by a female Nordic skier at Saint Michael's since Lauren Fereshetian '10 captured 18th in the 10K classic at the 2009 University of Vermont Carnival. First-year Amy Duclos (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) nabbed 58th at 59:54.7, and senior Elizabeth Cubberley (Acworth, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) was 67th in 1:03:23.1.

On the men's side, junior Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) clocked in at 46:13.7 to take 45th in the mass-start 15K classic, while first-year Liam Schmelzle (Saint Louis Park, Minn./Saint Louis Park) narrowly trailed in 49th at 46:31.7. Classmate Aaron Deeter (Truckee, Calif./Tahoe Truckee) took 55th in 47:48.8.
