Saint Michael's skiing posts second straight ninth-place showing

LYME, N.H./CRAFTSBURY COMMON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College Alpine and Nordic skiing teams combined to place ninth for the second straight weekend when the two-day, 16-school Dartmouth College Carnival concluded on Saturday. The Purple Knights scored 241 point to beat out 10th-place Harvard University, while the University of Vermont won the meet with 935 points. Alpine races occurred at Dartmouth Skiway, while Nordic events took place at Craftsbury Outdoor Center.

On Friday, senior Fredrik Sandell (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) led the Purple Knight men during the giant slalom by finishing 18th with a two-run combined time of 1:57.17, lopping 4.79 seconds off his opening run during a 56.19-second final trek. First-year Nick Cosentino (Waitsfield, Vt./Green Mountain Valley School) was 37th in 2:00.14, cutting 4.58 seconds, and junior Brad Farrell (West Windsor, Vt./Sharon Academy) took 43rd in 2:02.17, trimming 4.71 seconds.

During the women's giant slalom, first-year Ella Dorval Hall (Newbury, Mass./Gould Academy) claimed 33rd place in 2:04.17, cutting 5.83 seconds off of her opening run while traversing the mountain for the second time in 59.17 seconds. Classmate Meggane Grande (La Plagne, France/Lycée des métiers Ambroise Croizat) was 38th at 2:04.82, trimming 6.16 ticks en route to a second-run showing of 59.33, and junior Mary Joyce (Long Beach, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) took 53rd at 2:08.15, cutting 6.87 seconds.

First-year Emma Barnes (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) had the Purple Knights' top showing in the women's 1.4K freestyle sprint, finishing 50th in 3:37.6. Sophomore Catie Corrigan (Canajoharie, N.Y./Canajoharie Central School) and junior Elizabeth Cubberley (Acworth, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) took 63rd and 64th, respectively, in 3:55.0 and 3:56.6.

The men saw sophomore Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) lead the way in 52nd during the 1.6K freestyle sprint, crossing in 3:32.7. Classmate Trevor Owens (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) and senior Sam Hammond (Oakdale, Minn./North) claimed 57th and 58th, respectively, at 3:40.6 and 3:42.5.

Farrell paced the men in Saturday's slalom, tying for 14th in 1:39.91. Sandell took 27th at 1:41.96, and junior Kevin Krone (Copper Mountain, Colo./Summit) was 31st at 1:42.69. Grand took 17th for the women, clocking in at 1:50.21 to come within 0.15 seconds of the top 15, and Dorval Hall was 33rd at 1:54.45.

La Liberte had a career-best 33rd-place showing while finishing at 28:26.5 during the 10K freestyle, posting the best performance by a Purple Knight since Colin Delaney '13 during the 2013 Bates College Carnival. Hammond was 60th in 32:02.0, while sophomore Cody Putnam (Alburgh, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans) placed 64th at 33:107.0. Barnes topped the women in the same event, taking 51st at 36:48.7. Cubberley was 54th in 37:30.7, and Corrigan placed 56th at 38:02.0.

The Purple Knights head to the Middlebury College Carnival next weekend, beginning on Friday at 9 a.m.
