Purple Knights ninth after day one of Saint Michael's Carnival, Sandell seventh in GS

JEFFERSONVILLE, Vt./HUNTINGTON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College Alpine and Nordic skiing teams stand ninth out of 15 schools after the opening day of their own Saint Michael's Carnival on Friday. The Purple Knights' 139 points are two better than 10th-place Harvard University's, with the men's Alpine contingent scoring 66 of those points to nab sixth among 11 squads. In the first Saint Michael's Carnival since 2010, Alpine events are taking place at Smugglers' Notch Resort, while Nordic races are at Sleepy Hollow Inn, Ski and Bike Center. Saturday's action begins with the first run of women's slalom at 9:30 a.m.

Senior Fredrik Sandell (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) paced all Purple Knights by claiming seventh place in the men's giant slalom, clocking in at 1:52.21 between a pair of runs. Junior Brad Farrell (West Windsor, Vt./Sharon Academy) took 25th in 1:53.76, and first-year Nick Cosentino (Waitsfield, Vt./Green Mountain Valley School) placed 31st at 1:52.21.

In the women's giant slalom, first-year Ella Dorval Hall (Newbury, Mass./Gould Academy) claimed 27th in a time of 1:57.78, while classmate Meggane Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée des métiers Ambroise Croizat) moved up eight spots following her opening run to finish the day 30th, at 1:58.42.

In the men's 10K classic race, sophomore Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) was 49th by crossing the finish line at 35:06.7. Senior Isaiah St. Pierre (Charlestown, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) nabbed 56th in 36:01.6, and sophomore Cody Putnam (Alburgh, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans) was 62nd in 38:00.0.

First-year Emma Barnes (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) paced the Purple Knights during the women's 5K classic race in 53rd place with a time of 20:25.1. Sophomore Catie Corrigan (Canajoharie, N.Y./Canajoharie Central School) and junior Elizabeth Cubberley (Acworth, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) narrowly trailed in 55th and 56th, respectively, at 20:41.3 and 20:49.1.
