HANCOCK, Vt./RIPTON, Vt. - Saint Michael's College Alpine skiing junior Fredrik Sandell (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) and sophomore Brad Farrell (West Windsor, Vt./Sharon Academy) both broke into the top 15 during the slalom on Friday during day one of the season-ending Middlebury College Carnival. The Purple Knights were 10th out of 15 between Alpine and Nordic races, with the Alpine men fifth among 13 teams.
The carnival, which is also the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) Championship and NCAA East Regional Championship, is using the Middlebury Snow Bowl for Alpine events and Rikert Ski Touring Center for Nordic competitions. The meet concludes on Saturday.
Farrell earned placement among the top 15 for the fourth time this winter by clocking in at 1:38.17 between two runs to nab 11th, posting the best second run in the event at 46.41 to move up from 30th after his opening run. Sandell had similar second-run success, with his showing of 46.86 second only to Farrell. Sandell was 15th overall in 1:38.52 after tying for 28th during the morning run, taking home his third top-15 showing of the winter. Senior Carl-Oscar Bredengen (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) placed 26th in 1:39.40.
Only a handful of women completed a second run in the slalom before inclement conditions forced the suspension of the event, with final standings being based solely on the morning trek down the mountain. Sophomore Nicole Cordingley (Litchfield, N.H./Campbell) turned in her second-best slalom placement of the winter, taking 33rd in 55.42. Senior Shannon Conroy (Auburn, Calif./Home Schooled) was 44th in 56.99, and sophomore Mary Joyce (Long Beach, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) had her third-best placement of the season at 51st in 58.07.
For the ninth time in 10 individual races this winter, first-year Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) paced the Nordic men, claiming 55th place during the 10K classic in 32:45.6. Junior Isaiah St. Pierre (Charlestown, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) was 61st at 35:18.0, and sophomore Samuel Fogg (Rutland, Vt./Rutland) took 63rd at 35:54.2 as the first of four consecutive Purple Knights to cross the finish line.
