Farrell takes 11th in giant slalom at Dartmouth Carnival

LYME CENTER, N.H./CRAFTSBURY COMMON, Vt. - Saint Michael's College men's Alpine skiing sophomore Brad Farrell (West Windsor, Vt./Sharon Academy) broke into the top 20 for the fourth straight race on Friday, taking 11th in the giant slalom during day one of the Dartmouth College Carnival.

Between Alpine and Nordic races, the Purple Knights stand 13th among 16 institutions thanks to 63 points, just two shy of the Université de Montréal for 12th. Slalom races will be contested tomorrow at the Dartmouth Skiway, while the Nordic classic races take place at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center.

Farrell, who stood seventh after the first run of the day, claimed 11th thanks to a time of 2:04.41, just 0.04 seconds shy of the 10th-place skier. In an event that included 103 starters, including more than 75 collegians, Farrell was the only Purple Knight to qualify for a second run. Seniors Matt Beers (Wrentham, Mass./Killington Mountain School) and Carl-Oscar Bredengen (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) and sophomore Kevin Krone (Copper Mountain, Colo./Summit) all finished within 0.54 seconds of one another in the first run of the day.

On the women's side, sophomore Nicole Cordingley (Litchfield, N.H./Campbell) placed 53rd in the giant slalom in 2:20.85. Classmate Willow Smith (Bradford, Vt./Oxbow) narrowly missed qualifying for a second run, trailing the final student-athlete to make the morning cut by 0.35 seconds.

First-year Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) led the Purple Knights by taking 56th in the 10K freestyle, clocking in at 29:22.8. Juniors Isaiah St. Pierre (Charlestown, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) and Sam Hammond (Oakdale, Minn./North) were 64th and 66th, respectively.

Senior Silke Hynes (Burlington, Ontario/Milton District) matched La Liberte with a 56th-place showing in the women's 5K freestyle at 17:32.0. Junior Chloe Boutelle (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) took 63rd, and first-year Julia Snyder (Fairfax, Vt./BFA-Fairfax) was 64th.
