BARTLETT, N.H./JACKSON, N.H. - Sophomore Brad Farrell (West Windsor, Vt./Sharon Academy) finished a career-high 10th in the giant slalom on Friday to highlight the Saint Michael's College Alpine and Nordic skiing teams' performances during day one of the two-day University of New Hampshire Carnival. The Alpine events took place at the Attitash Mountain Resort, while Nordic is being contested this weekend at the Jackson Nordic Center. The Purple Knights stand 13th out of 16 institutions heading into Saturday's final day.
Farrell, who stood 19th after his first run, had the sixth-fastest second run to notch a composite time of 2:21.53. Junior Fredrik Sandell (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) placed 36th at 2:27:14, improving his standing by nine spots after his first run, while first-year Shane Love (North Conway, N.H./Gould Academy) was 37th in 2:27.86, also moving up nine positions thanks to his second run.
Sophomores Mary Joyce (Long Beach, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) and Willow Smith (Bradford, Vt./Oxbow) both qualified for a second run in the women's giant slalom, but neither finished.
First-year Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) led the men during the Nordic 10K classic, placing 60th in a time of 28:50.6. Classmate Ryan Boquist (Meredith, N.H./Inter-Lakes) claimed 64th at 30:50.2, while junior Isaiah St. Pierre (Charlestown, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) was just 0.8 seconds back in 65th.
The top three Purple Knight women in the 5K classic were within four spots of one another, with junior Chloe Boutelle (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) coming in 61st at 17:37.1, senior Silke Hynes (Burlington, Ontario/Milton District) in 62nd and first-year Julia Snyder (Fairfax, Vt./BFA-Fairfax) taking 64th.
