MIDDLEBURY, Vt./RIPTON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College skiing team finished 10th among 16 institutions on Saturday during the final day of the Middlebury College Carnival. The Alpine events took place at the Middlebury Snow Bowl, and Nordic races were run at the Rikert Ski Touring Center. The Purple Knights recorded 266 points, while the University of Vermont won at 933 points.
In the giant slalom, senior Christina Billotti (Massapequa, N.Y./Green Mountain Valley School) turned in a season-best 19th-place finish in 2:13.48. Classmate Gabbi Hall (San Anselmo, Calif./Forest Charter School) took 35th at 2:16.25, and first-year Nicole Cordingley (Litchfield, N.H./Campbell) was 41st in 2:17.70.
Among the men's Alpine skiers, first-year Brad Farrell (West Windsor, Vt./Sharon Academy) moved from a tie for 23rd following his opening run into 16th by the end of the day, with a composite time of 2:04.70. Sophomore Fredrik Sandell (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) was 21st in 2:05.51, and junior Matt Beers (Wrentham, Mass./Killington Mountain School) turned in a career-best showing for the second straight day, placing 29th in 2:07.18.
During the Nordic portion of the day, senior Colin Delaney (Lake Placid, N.Y./National Sports Academy) was the lone Purple Knight competitor in the men's 20K freestyle mass start, placing 34th at 50:08.1, while sophomore Chloe Boutelle (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) paced Saint Michael's in the women's 15K freestyle mass start at 49:09.4. Senior Katlyn Keane (Bethel, Maine/Telstar Regional) was 43.7 seconds behind. Junior Silke Hynes (Burlington, Ontario/Milton District) was the third Saint Michael's finisher.
The Alpine skiers return to the slopes at the Dartmouth Skiway tomorrow for a non-carnival slalom race that will go toward their point totals for the NCAA Championship after the slalom competition at last weekend's Dartmouth College Carnival had been canceled.
