MIDDLEBURY, Vt./RIPTON, Vt. - Saint Michael's College men's Alpine skiing junior Carl-Oscar Bredengen (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) and first-year Brad Farrell (West Windsor, Vt./Sharon Academy) both broke into the top 20 in the slalom on Friday during the opening day of the Middlebury College Carnival, as the Purple Knights stand 10th out of 16 teams following Alpine and Nordic races.
The competition concludes tomorrow, with Alpine events taking place at the Middlebury Snow Bowl, and Nordic races being run at the Rikert Ski Touring Center.
Bredengen and Farrell helped the men's Alpine team earn a seventh-place score among 13 squads, as Farrell was 17th in 1:37.66, and Bredengen was just 0.14 seconds behind in 18th. In his first carnival of the year, junior Matt Beers (Wrentham, Mass./Killington Mountain School) jumped from 46th after his opening run to place a career-high 36th thanks to a two-run aggregate time of 1:44.21.
In the women's slalom, senior Gabbi Hall (San Anselmo, Calif./Forest Charter School) topped the Purple Knights for the eighth time in as many events this winter by placing 32nd in 1:47.21. First-year Nicole Cordingley (Litchfield, N.H./Campbell) was 42nd at 1:50.08, and junior Shannon Conroy (Auburn, Calif./Home Schooled) placed 45th in 1:52.79 during her first carnival of the season.
Senior Colin Delaney (Lake Placid, N.Y./National Sports Academy) paced the Purple Knights during the men's 10K classic, taking 50th in 29:47.3. First-year Samuel Fogg (Rutland, Vt./Rutland) and sophomore Sam Hammond (Oakdale, Minn./North) were the next two finishers for the squad.
In the women's 5K classic, junior Silke Hynes (Burlington, Ontario/Milton District) clocked in at 19:33.4, with sophomore Chloe Boutelle (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) and senior Katlyn Keane (Bethel, Maine/Telstar Regional) earning second- and third-place scoring, respectively, for the Purple Knights.
