Men's Alpine takes 4th, Saint Michael's 9th heading into final day at UVM Carnival

STOWE, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's Alpine skiing team placed fourth among 12 institutions in the slalom on Saturday during the University of Vermont Carnival, helping the Purple Knight squads end the second day of competition sitting ninth out of 16 schools. With 258 points, the Purple and Gold has three more than Harvard University, as the Alpine portion of the meet concluded at the Stowe Mountain Resort on Saturday. The carnival comes to an end on Sunday, when the second day of Nordic races occurs at the Trapp Family Lodge.

Thanks to a trio of top-17 finishes in the slalom, men's Alpine totaled 88 points, edging out UVM and its 85 points to capture fourth place. Freshman Fredrik Sandell (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) took seventh out of 80 competitors with a two-run total of 1:45.91, coming within 0.83 seconds of a top-five finish. His opening run of 54.02 was the fifth-best showing in the competition. Sophomore Carl-Oscar Bredengen (Reistad, Norway/Donski Alpine) took 12th in 1:46.87, just 0.24 ticks shy of the top 10, thanks to the eighth-best second-run performance, clocking in at 51.51. Senior JD Levine (Toronto, Ontario/National Ski Academy) was 17th in 1:49.01.

In the women's slalom, sophomore Shannon Conroy (Auburn, Calif./Home Schooled) took 17th among 72 starters in 1:57.20, reaching the bottom of the mountain 3.0 seconds quicker during her second run. Sophomore Kerstin Middleton (Greenland, N.H./Proctor Academy) was 36th, trimming 4.48 seconds off her second descent. The Purple Knights' remaining four skiers either did not finish one of their runs or did not qualify for the second competition, as the final scoring spot went unfilled, but Saint Michael's still beat out three schools, including UVM.

During the first day of Nordic races, junior Colin Delaney (Lake Placid, N.Y./National Sports Academy) paced the men in the 10k classic at 32:00.8, with senior Robert Sitzer (Lenox, Mass./Lenox Memorial) placing two spots behind. Freshman Brian Vargo (Shaftsbury, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) was his team's third scorer.

Sophomore Gabrielle Naranja (Fort Kent, Maine/Fort Kent Community) was the top Saint Michael's finisher in the 5k classic, in 19:14.3, while freshmen Chloe Boutelle (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) and Emily Burns (North Creek, N.Y./Johnsburg Central) took the next two scoring spots.
