STOWE, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's and women's Alpine skiing squads both placed eighth in the giant slalom on Friday during the opening day of the University of Vermont Carnival at the Stowe Mountain Resort. With Nordic competing on Saturday and Sunday at the Trapp Family Lodge, Alpine got the Purple Knights out to an eighth-place showing overall out of 13 institutions and completes its races tomorrow.
Junior Gabbi Hall (San Anselmo, Calif./Forest Charter School) posted an 11th-place finish among 68 women's giant slalom entrants, with her two-run time of 2:14.13 coming thanks to cutting 3.79 seconds off her first run. Classmate Christina Billotti (Massapequa, N.Y./Green Mountain Valley School) was 16th in 2:15.13, trimming 3.67 ticks off her opening trek down the mountain. Saint Michael's joined Bates College, Dartmouth College, Middlebury College and UVM as the only schools to place multiple skiers among the top 16. Graduate student Heidi Robbins (Mendon, Vt./Killington Mountain School/Saint Lawrence) placed 30th.
Freshman Fredrik Sandell (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) continued a standout rookie season by taking 13th among 74 racers in the men's giant slalom, cutting 2.5 ticks off his second-run time to clock in at 2:07.56. Sophomore Tim Spangler (Summit, N.J./Summit) was 33rd, and senior Nathan Bryant (Lee, N.H./Oyster River) took the third scoring slot for Saint Michael's, placing 44th.
