CLERMONT, Fla. - The Saint Michael's College softball team lost a pair of contests on Thursday during The Spring Games at Legends Way, falling 3-1 against Edinboro (Pa.) University and 8-0 in six innings to Saint Thomas Aquinas (N.Y.) College. The Purple Knights remained winless through seven games.
Senior Danielle Barbato (Hillsdale, N.Y./Taconic Hills) was 1-for-3 with a run in the opener versus Edinboro, and first-year Danielle Markowski (Ellington, Conn./Ellington) finished 1-for-3 with an RBI. Classmate Torie Rathwell (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) tossed a complete game, allowing all three runs - but just one earned - on eight hits over six innings while striking out four.
Sophomore Brittany Allen was 3-for-3 with one run and two doubles for the 7-3 Fighting Scots. Senior Claire Johnston drove in two runs, sophomore Danna Heh finished 2-for-3, and senior Kalet Lenart allowed one run on four hits in seven frames, fanning six.
Johnston's two-run single in the bottom of the second inning plated a pair of unearned runs to give Edinboro the lead for good. Rathwell led off the fifth by reaching on an error as her team's first base runner, and Markowski's two-out single put runners at first and second before Lenart snared an inning-ending line drive. Sophomore Olivia Jankowski scored on an error in the sixth to make it 3-0 before Saint Michael's loaded the bases with one down in the seventh on singles by Barbato, Rathwell and sophomore Fallon Tierney (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial). Markowski's groundout produced the first run, but the final batter struck out looking with the tying run at second base.
Markowski was 1-for-2 against Saint Thomas Aquinas, and junior Danielle Brown (Vergennes, Vt./Vergennes Union) held the Spartans off the board until the fourth before suffering the loss, allowing five runs in 4.1 innings. She struck out three.
Sophomore Kelcy McGeehan was 3-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and two doubles for 7-5 Saint Thomas Aquinas, while classmate Briana Keaveney went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, missing the cycle by a home run. First-year Amanda Schweitzer doubled twice and scored twice, and senior Julie Sosnicki spun the six-inning, two-hit shutout with three strikeouts.
Tierney cut down two different Spartans trying to steal second base during the first inning, as the Purple Knights worked around six base runners over the opening three frames combined to keep the game scoreless heading into the fourth. Senior Christina Brazeau (Warwick, R.I./Saint Mary Academy-Bay View) singled with two down in the top of the third for the first Saint Michael's hit but was left on first, and Saint Thomas Aquinas loaded the bases with one out in the fourth before Brown nearly wriggled out of danger, striking out the following hitter but yielding a three-run triple to Keaveney with two down for the first runs of the game. Four more Spartans scored on five hits in the fifth before McGeehan provided the walk-off sac fly in the sixth.
The Purple Knights complete their Spring Break trip tomorrow with a pair of contests, taking on Concordia University-Saint Paul (Minn.) at 1 p.m. and Indiana University of Pennsylvania at 6 p.m.
