RINDGE, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College softball team (12-26, 8-20 Northeast-10 Conference) ended its season in style on Sunday with a doubleheader sweep at Franklin Pierce University (5-35, 1-25 NE-10). Saint Michael's won game one in eight innings, 4-3, and the nightcap in five innings, 13-1.
Senior Ashley Harkins (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) finished her career by breaking several single-season and career records in the process. Her 3-for-3 showing in game two gave her 55 hits on the year, and 165 career hits, breaking the old records of 52 single-season hits and 164 career hits held by another Colchester native, Casey Brooks '07 (her 52 hits came in 2005).
She also finished the year with a .426 batting average, the seventh-best single-season mark in program history, and the best since Noelle Gill '05 hit .431 in 2003. And she finishes 2009 with 13 doubles and 38 runs scored, established new single-season program records in both categories.
Classmate Megan O'Connor (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) also set a single-season program record on Sunday. With two runs batted in in game two, she finished the year with 32 RBIs, one more than the old program record set by Gill in 2003. She finishes her career with a program-record 31 doubles.
In Sunday's opener, O'Connor doubled and scored in the top of the eighth inning, leading the Purple Knights to a comeback win. O'Connor finished game one 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored, while Harkins went 4-for-4 with three runs. Sophomore Meghan Colitti (Dover, N.H./Berwick Academy) plated O'Connor in the eighth inning with an RBI double, while O'Connor earned the win on the mound with two innings of scoreless relief of freshman Hillary Berno (Saint Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy-Saint Albans), who allowed three runs (all unearned) in six innings.
For Franklin Pierce, sophomore Emily Griffin (Leominster, Mass.) and seniors Courtney Jacobs (Fitchburg, Mass.) and Stephanie Howard (Norwalk, Conn.) each singled twice, with Howard driving in a run, while freshman Rachel Baxter (Cumberland, R.I.) doubled and drove in two runs. Jacobs suffered the complete-game loss on the mound, allowing just two earned runs.
In game two, Saint Michael's scored in every inning to end the year on a high. O'Connor doubled, scored two and had two RBIs in the win, and also pitched a complete-game five-hitter, striking out six batters. Harkins completed a 7-for-7 day at the plate with three more singles, while sophomore Kate Condon (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) belted her second home run of the season. Colitti singled twice and scored twice to aid the Purple Knights' 15-hit attack in the nightcap.
For the Ravens, Howard singled twice, while senior Jen Ryan (Winthrop, Mass.) had an RBI double. Sophomore Kayla Johnson (Hudson, N.H.) allowed seven earned runs in two innings to take the loss.
