Softball Drops Two At UMass Lowell, 9-1 And 8-3

LOWELL, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College softball team (10-26, 6-20 Northeast-10 Conference) dropped a pair of games at the University of Massachusetts Lowell on Saturday, falling in game one, 9-1, and the nightcap, 8-3.

In game one, UMass Lowell belted 11 hits in a game halted in the bottom of the sixth inning due to the eight-run rule. For UMass Lowell, senior Stacey Lajoie (Gardner, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, two RBIs, and two stolen bases. Sophomore Hilary Hopkins (San Diego, Calif.) added three singles, two runs and two RBIs, while freshman Elissa Boris (Gardner, Mass.) allowed just one run and three hits in five innings to earn the victory.

For the Purple Knights, sophomore Kelly Rose Losi (Milton, Mass./Milton) singled in the second inning, and scored on an RBI single by classmate Kate Condon (Holliston, Mass./Holliston). Freshman Hillary Berno (Saint Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy-Saint Albans) allowed five runs (two earned) in two innings in suffering the loss.

In game two, Saint Michael's senior Ashley Harkins (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) set the program's single-season record with her 12th and 13th doubles of the year, but it wasn't enough to prevent the sweep. For UMass Lowell (10-29-1, 9-16-1), freshman Lindsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a home run and single, while Lajoie added two singles, two runs, and a stolen base. Every starter had at least one hit for the River Hawks in the nightcap, as the hosts scored five times in the bottom of the fifth inning to snap a 2-all tie. Sophomore Rachel Schafler (Floral Park, N.Y.) pitched a complete game to earn the win, allowing two earned runs.

Harkins finished 2-for-3 with a run and RBI, while Condon had another RBI single. Senior Megan O'Connor (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) also singled and drove in a run, and she suffered the complete-game loss, surrendering six earned runs.

Saint Michael's closes its season on Sunday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Franklin Pierce University.
