Softball Drops Doubleheader To Saint Anselm, 5-1 And 14-2


Colchester, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College softball team (10-24, 6-18 NE-10) dropped a pair of games to Saint Anselm College (18-21-1, 10-13-1 NE-10), Wednesday afternoon on Doc Jacobs Field. The Purple Knights fell in the first game, 5-1, and 14-2 in five innings in the nightcap.

In game one, the Hawks scored two runs in the third inning and three in the sixth inning to come away with the 5-1 victory. Saint Michael's added its run in the seventh when senior Ashley Harkins (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) drew a walk with the bases loaded. Saint Anselm committed just one error in the game while the Purple Knights had three. Senior Brittany Birch (Bradford, Mass.) went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two drive in, while classmate Nicole Biginski (Beverly, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Junior Megan Lemire (Worcester, Mass.) went the distance, giving up just one earned run and striking out two in the win.

For Saint Michael's, Harkins led the way offensively going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Senior Megan O'Connor (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown), sophomore Meghan Colitti (Dover, N.H./Berwick Academy), junior Katelyn Billings (Saint Albans, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans), junior Lindsay Bernard (Scarborough, Maine/Catherine McAuley), sophomore Kelly Losi (Milton, Mass./Milton), and junior Kelly Egan (Milford, Mass./Marian) all finished with a hit each. Freshman Hilary Berno (Saint Albans, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans) took the loss, pitching seven innings, while giving up four earned runs and striking out four.

In game two, Saint Anselm put up four runs on four hits highlighted with a Kayla McEachern (Stoneham, Mass.) grand slam. The Hawks would then put up six runs in the fourth inning and four in the fifth en route to the 14-2 victory. Junior Liz LeBrun (Rowley, Mass.) highlighted the four-run fifth inning with a three-run home run. Sophomore Jaclyn Giannino (Beverly, Mass.) finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Baginski went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. McEachern would finish with five RBI for the Hawks. Junior Lisa Caruso (Granby, Conn.) pitched five innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out two in the win.

For Saint Michael's, Billings went 2-for-3 with a run scored, and O'Connor finished 2-for-3 and drove in both of the Purple Knights' runs. Berno went 2-for-2 with a run scored to round out Saint Michael's offensive output. O'Connor took the loss, pitching 3.1 innings, while giving up eight earned runs on nine hits for the loss.

Saint Michael's returns to action on Saturday, as the Purple Knights travel to league-rival rival UMass Lowell for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
