COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College softball team (7-24, 1-21 Northeast-10 Conference) lost its final two home games of the season on Thursday, falling to league-leading Le Moyne College. The Dolphins took game one, 7-1, and earned a 13-2 win in the nightcap.
In game one, Le Moyne (32-8, 19-1 NE-10) broke open a close game with a five-run fifth inning. Senior Sarah Reed (DeWitt, N.Y.) doubled and singled for the Dolphins, and improved to 9-2 on the mound this season with 4.2 innings of relief. Sophomore Bailey Phillips (Rochester, N.Y.) belted a two-run home run and added two singles to pace the Dolphins' 15-hit attack.
For Saint Michael's, freshman Meghan Colitti (Dover, N.H./Berwick Academy) singled three times, while sophomore Lindsay Bernard (Scarborough, Maine/Catherine McAuley) added two singles as the Purple Knights tallied nine hits, but stranded nine baserunners. Junior Megan O'Connor (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) took the complete-game loss.
In game two, Le Moyne blasted four home runs and cruised to the six-inning win. Reed and junior Jennifer Farrelly (Latham, N.Y.) each hit a pair of round-trippers for the Dolphins, with both of Farrelly's home runs three-run blasts. Junior Caitlin O'Neill (Pittsford, N.Y.) added four singles and three runs as the Dolphins laced 20 hits in ther nightcap. Farrelly pitched the final three innings, allowing just one hit, to earn the victory.
For Saint Michael's, junior Ashley Harkins (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) belted a two-run home run in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 8-2. She also singled for the only other Purple Knight hit. Sophomore Kelly Egan (Milford, Mass./Marian) took the loss on the mound.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Saturday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Stonehill College.
