NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Saint Michael's College softball team (7-10, 1-7 Northeast-10 Conference) dropped a pair of one-run games at Southern Connecticut State University on Thursday, falling in game one, 4-3, and in the nightcap, 7-6.
In the opener, Saint Michael's left 11 runners on base in suffering the narrow defeat. Sophomore Lindsay Bernard (Scarborough, Maine/Catherine McAuley) singled twice for the Purple Knights, while freshman Meghan Colitti (Dover, N.H./Berwick Academy) doubled. Sophomore Kelly Egan (Milford, Mass./Marian) pitched 4.2 innings of one-run relief for the Purple Knights.
In game two, Saint Michael's scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 6-all, but SCSU (11-20, 4-6 NE-10) led off the bottom of the seventh inning with back-to-back doubles to earn the sweep. Colitti singled three times in the loss, while juniors Ashley Harkins (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) and Megan O'Connor (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) went a combined 4-for-8 at the plate with two runs scored and fivr RBIs. O'Connor suffered the complete-game loss on the mound, allowing no walks.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at league-rival Assumption College.
