PURPLE KNIGHTS RALLY FALLS SHORT, SAINT MICHAEL'S DROPS PAIR TO SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE

April 17, 2008

COLCHESTER, Vt.- The Saint Michael's College softball team (7-16, 1-13 NE-10) suffered a pair of one-run loses to Southern New Hampshire (9-12, 6-8 NE-10) Thursday afternoon at Doc Jacobs Field.  Dropping game one, 2-1, Saint Michael's opened up the scoring in the first on one of junior Megan O'Connor's (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) two hits in the game.  O'Connor also pitched a complete game, allowing only three hits and striking out two.  In game two, the Purple Knights rallied from five down to score three in the seventh, including two from O'Connor as part of a two-hit outing, but fell 5-4 in the end.

Earning the win in game one for the Penmen was junior Ashley Bernstein (Stoughton, Mass./Cardinal Spellman), who pitched a complete game while being walked twice and scoring the winning run.  Classmate Karissa Bettencourt (Norton, Mass./Norton) accounted for an RBI with a solo home run in the fourth and senior Ashley Guertin (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) knocked in the eventually game-winner in the fifth.

With a pair of hits from O'Connor, Saint Michael's was blanked through the final six innings to drop their eighth straight contest.  Freshmen Kelly Rose Losi (Milton, Mass./Milton) and Meghan Colitti (Dover, N.H./Berwick Acad.) each recorded hits in the defensive battle that was game one.

In game two, the Penmen jumped all over the Purple Knights with four runs in the first, due in large part to a two-run home run from freshman Casey Stoodley (Salem, N.H./Salem).  Sophomore Andrea Clausi (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) also registered multiple hits, while driving in a pair of runs.  Senior Mary Bradford (Big Bear, Calif./Big Bear) held a no-hitter through four innings but a late rally from Saint Michael's made things interesting.  Bradford pitched a complete game allowing nine hits and four runs while striking out two.

Scoring all four runs in the last two innings, the Purple Knights battled as the freshmen Losi and Colitti each reached base before O'Connor would send them home.  Losi drove in a run of her own and sophomore catcher Heather French (Sheldon, Vt./BFA-St. Albans) tallied an RBI as well.

The Purple Knights return to action on Saturday, April at American International in Springfield, Massachusetts for a 1:00 p.m. start to a doubleheader.
