COLCHESTER, Vt.- The Saint Michael's College softball team (6-7, 0-4 NE-10) opened their 2008 home schedule on Monday, dropping a double-header to Merrimack (4-8, 4-2 NE-10) on Doc Jacobs Field. Game one remained scoreless until the Warriors drove in three runs in the ninth and game two ended in a 8-3 final just before dusk. Junior Megan O'Connor (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) pitched a complete nine-inning game in game one and went 4-for-4 with an RBI in the second.
In game one, junior Ashley Harkins (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) and sophomore Heather French (Shledon, Vt./BFA-St. Albans) each knocked a pair of hits, but pitching a five-hit complete nine-inning game, Merrimack's junior pitcher Jill Gagnon (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial) held the Purple Knights scoreless, improving her season mark to 1-2. For the Warriors, freshman Kara Melillo (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) went 3-for-4, driving in a ninth-inning run to secure Merrimack's third straight conference win.
In the night cap, Saint Michael's jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first and hung around in the sixth, 4-3, but gave up four runs in the seventh to establish the insurmountable 8-3 lead. In addition to O'Connor's perfect game in the box, freshman third baseman Kelly Rose Losi (Milton, Mass./Milton) recorded a pair of hits and a pair of runs in the loss.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Tuesday against Northeast-10 rival UMass-Lowell at Doc Jacobs Field for a double-header at 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
