COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's tennis team was pegged for a 10th-place finish in the Northeast-10 Conference's preseason coaches' poll, which was released by the league office today and chosen by the member institutions' head coaches. The Purple Knights received nine points in the 10-team rankings, with Southern New Hampshire University (81), which won three of the last four NE10 Championships, taking first.
Saint Michael's, which opened its season with a loss on Oct. 14 to the Penmen, who have qualified for six of the past seven NCAA Tournaments and are ranked fourth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region poll. Each of the Purple Knights' first three home matches is against a regionally-ranked foe, while they visit Adelphi University, NE10 Tournament runner-up two of the past three years, on March 31.
Three veterans return to a six-man roster, with sophomore Matt Mosher (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) having won three singles matches while appearing in 15 doubles contests as a first-year. Junior Dan Foley (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) appeared in each of the top five singles spots last season while serving as a regular at No. 1 doubles. Among the Purple Knights' newcomers is first-year midyear transfer Colby Antonacci (Bolton Valley, Vt./Mount Mansfield Union/Saint Anselm), who went 3-4 between singles and doubles during the fall at NE10 counterpart Saint Anselm College.
In head coach Ryan Magee's '11 third season at the helm, the Purple Knights visit Saint Lawrence University on Sunday at 12 p.m. before resuming their NE10 slate by hosting Bentley University on Feb. 24 at 12 p.m. The Falcons were picked second in the preseason rankings.
