COLCHESTER, Vt. - Three Saint Michael's College men's soccer players earned spots on the Northeast-10 Conference Weekly Honor Roll for the week ending on Sunday, Oct. 1, as senior Adrián Díaz (Santiago de Compostela, Spain/Vermont Academy), sophomore Jacob von Giebel (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon Regional) and first-year Leland Gazo (Colchester, Vt./Rice Memorial/Bradley) were all lauded for the first time this fall.
Díaz scored twice and anchored a defense that allowed one goal during a 1-1 week. While playing all 90 minutes at left back, Díaz helped the Purple Knights allow only four shots on goal in a 1-0 loss at The College of Saint Rose on Wednesday. Against Bentley University on Saturday, Díaz netted two goals in a 10:15 span while helping his squad yield only four more shots on goal in a 5-0 win. During his first season as a back after a move from the midfield, Díaz has notched two goals and one assist
Von Giebel netted the first two goals against Bentley, posting the winner in the 22nd minute and an insurance tally during the 51st. He already has career highs with three goals, one assist and seven points this fall, having started three times in seven outings.
Gazo backstopped the Purple Knights with a 0.50 goals-against average and an .875 save percentage while playing all 180 minutes last week. After allowing just a 35th-minute goal and making three stops at Saint Rose, Gazo had four saves versus Bentley to nab his first collegiate win and shutout. He is tied for 10th in the NE10 with 23 saves.
The Purple Knights, who stand 2-5-1 overall and 1-5 in the NE10, host regionally-ranked Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The Owls were seventh in last week's United Soccer Coaches East Region poll.
