Men's soccer completes 2011 season at NE-10 foe Assumption, falls by 2-0 count

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College men's soccer team completed its season on Friday evening at Assumption College, dropping a 2-0 decision in a Northeast-10 Conference game. The Purple Knights completed the fall at 5-10-2 overall and 3-9-1 in the league, while the Greyhounds are 3-10-1 and 3-9-1.

Junior Logan Kingman (New Bern, N.C./New Bern) made six stops for Saint Michael's, which yielded both goals in the opening 16:15 before holding even with the hosts in second-half shots, each firing four.

Seniors Scott Buckholz (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) and Luke Whelan (New Fairfield, Conn./Immaculate) scored for the hosts, while sophomore Matt Wrenn (Windham, N.H./Tilton School) picked up the win after making one save in the first half.

Whelan scored off a ninth-minute corner kick for the eventual winner before being denied a second goal by a Saint Michael's field player in the 13th minute, but Buckholz made it 2-0 at 16:15. The visitors sent a pair of headers toward the net later in the period, with Wrenn snaring one and the other going wide. With the Purple Knights looking to break on the board in the 83rd minute and spark a late rally, freshman Thomas Barron (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) was stopped on his team's last shot of the game.
