COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's soccer team made their second consecutive double overtime appearance against Saint Anselm College on Duffy Field Tuesday. The Purple Knights fell to the Hawks 3-2 with 30 seconds remaining in the second overtime.
Saint Michael's held a promising 2-0 lead by the midway point of the first half. Junior Blake Schill (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex(Worcester Academy)) found freshman Jordan Diana (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) in scoring position in front of the net, assisting Diana's unstoppable shot on goal. Senior co-captain Jared Berry (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) contributed a goal five minutes later on a free kick opportunity outside the 18 yard box, pocketing the ball in the bottom right hand corner of the net. Before the end of the half, Hawks sophomore Justin Colella (Wilmington, Mass./St. John's Prep) shot a ball just out of reach of Purple Knights senior co-captain Jason Burnett (South Burlington, Vt./Pendelton School (IMG Academy)).
The Hawks tied the game, 2-2, less than two minutes into the second half. Senior Michael Searson (Avon, Conn./Avon) found senior Paul Kilday (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) in front of the net for the goal that eventually brought both teams into overtime.
The Purple Knights were only able to get one shot in the first overtime, with the Hawks taking 3. With time running out in the second overtime, Hawks Sophomore Justin Labonte (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) capitalized on a pass he received from senior Tyler Sangster (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury), ending the game, 3-2, with 30 seconds left on the clock.
Saint Anselm goalie, senior John Corridan (Hollistan, Mass./Skidmore) recorded 4 saves in the game, while Saint Michael's goalie, Burnett, stopped 11 shots on goal.
The Purple Knights will hit the road for their next Northeast-10 Conference game against Assumption College, battling the Greyhounds under the lights at 7 p.m.
