Moriarty Becomes First Academic All-District Saint Michael's Men's Lacrosse Player

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse rising senior Will Moriarty (Ashland, Mass./Catholic Memorial) was one of 11 student-athletes chosen for the Google Cloud NCAA Division II Academic All-District 1 At-Large team on Thursday, becoming the first member of his program to claim the honor.

Moriarty earned an accolade voted upon by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) while advancing to the Academic All-America national ballot, which will be considered later this month. Academic All-America selections will be announced in June. Of the 11 Academic All-District picks, Moriarty was among nine Northeast-10 Conference representatives, three of which play lacrosse.

Moriarty joins recent graduates Bradley Anair (men's soccer), Emily Ferreri (women's basketball) and Levi Holmes III (men's basketball) in landing Academic All-District for the 2018-19 school year, with the four honorees tying a school record set in 2008-09 and matched in 2009-10.

A defender and team captain, Moriarty adds to a list of postseason accolades that included landing on the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) All-New England second team and NE10 All-Conference third team. Behind a school-record 45 caused turnovers, Moriarty leads Division II in both caused turnovers and caused turnovers per game (3.0). He helped the Purple Knights average 11.4, good for fifth in the nation. Moriarty's 45 caused turnovers are tied for sixth in NCAA history, while his average sits fifth. Moriarty, who added 39 ground balls, notched 24 caused turnovers against opponents either nationally ranked or receiving votes.

Moriarty is a double major in accounting and business administration, while also minoring in economics. He landed a Division 2 Athletics Directors Association (D2 ADA) Academic Achievement Award for the 2017-18 school year and has qualified for the NE10 Commissioner's Honor Roll five times.

CoSIDA sponsors Academic All-America programs for baseball, basketball, cross country/track & field, football, soccer, softball and women's volleyball, while 16 others are grouped into the At-Large category, including field hockey, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, skiing, swimming & diving and tennis, all of which are sponsored by Saint Michael's College.

To be nominated for the Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic standing, possess at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA, and be a starter or significant reserve.
