2019 Men's Lacrosse Outlook

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The largest first-year contingent in three decades comprises nearly half of the Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team's roster this spring, as the Purple Knights welcome 17 rookies to a 35-man roster that features veteran experience primarily in the attack and midfield segments of the field. The Purple Knights received a vote toward the latest United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) national poll.

The Purple Knights received a vote toward the Feb. 25 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) national poll ... 17 members of the team are first-years, the program's most since bringing in 20 in 1989 ... more than half of the roster is comprised of student-athletes who were not on the team last spring ... Saint Michael's lost four games by three goals or less in 2018, including 10-8 against Le Moyne College, then ranked No. 1 in the nation ... the Purple and Gold tied for seventh in NCAA Division II in man-down defense (80.0%), posted its fewest turnovers in a decade, its lowest goals-against average (9.57) in five seasons, and the fourth-most caused turnovers (133) in program annals ... the Purple Knights' defensive highlights featured three straight shutout periods for the first time since April 2006, and a shutout streak of 56:55, their longest since 2004 ... head coach Alex Smith, who reached 100 career college victories during his first season at Saint Michael's last spring, is joined by three assistant coaches, including Kevin Hunt '12 and Craig MacDerment, who last coached with the Purple Knights in 2013 but have since been heavily involved in local high school and club programs.

Five of the Purple Knights' 11 NE10 foes were ranked in the USILA's Feb. 25 national poll, while another three were receiving votes ... six of the Purple and Gold's first seven games occur on the road, beginning on Sunday when Saint Michael's takes on Dominican (N.Y.) University at Clarkstown (N.Y.) South High School ... the road trip includes two contests in Florida, one of which is at 15th-ranked Lynn University on March 21, before the Purple Knights visit No. 12 Pace University two days later ... Saint Michael's begins its home and Northeast-10 Conference schedules versus Assumption College, which is receiving national votes, on March 16 ... each of the Purple Knights' final three regular-season games is against teams currently nationally ranked, with its finale on April 23 against defending national champion Merrimack College at Duffy Field ... the top six teams in the NE10's regular-season standings begin postseason play on April 27.
