COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team fell to Southern New Hampshire University, 10-7, Tuesday afternoon on Duffy Field. The Purple Knights are 3-7 overall and 0-7 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Penmen, who are receiving votes toward this week's New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) poll, are 4-6 and 2-5.
First-year Jon Lockwood (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) registered a career-high five points on four goals and one assist for the Purple Knights. Senior Charlie Murphy (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) and juniors Connor McGuirk (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) and Hunter Goodwin (Milton, Vt./Milton) each tallied a goal while Goodwin scooped up two ground balls. Junior Matt Cotter (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional) and sophomore Alec Sharlow (Watertown, N.Y./South Jefferson) pitched in an assist each with Cotter picking up four ground balls and Sharlow one.
Sophomore Will Moriarty (Ashland, Mass./Catholic Memorial) scooped up five ground balls and caused three turnovers, senior Neil Gallagher (Stowe, Vt./Green Mountain Valley School) picked up four ground balls and caused two turnovers, classmate Bobby Frank (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) had four ground balls and caused one turnover, and junior Brendan Morris (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) picked up two ground balls and caused two turnovers. Senior Johnny Karanasios (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) also forced two turnovers. Both sophomore Ralph Grillone III (Brockton, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) and first-year Joseph Gerardi (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) picked up three ground balls.
With sophomore Justin Richmond (New Market, Md./Linganore) winning three faceoffs, he pushed his career faceoff victories total to 151 to tie Cooper Quenneville '14 for fifth in program history. Senior Matt Arnold (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset) won four faceoffs in seven tries. Senior Jake Sonberg (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) served 45 minutes in net with six saves and first-year Herb Hazelton (Darien, Conn./Brewster Academy) finished off the final quarter with four saves and a ground ball. The Purple Knights went 22-for-22 on clear attempts.
Senior Zach Tanner had two goals and an assist while classmate Devin Calkins added three assists for the Penmen. Senior Khyan Gaddy and junior Tom Schutz both added two goals. Senior Corey Cairo pitched in a goal and an assist while junior Andrew Liu registered a goal, eight ground balls, and won 12 faceoffs. Junior Joseph Mayernik and first-year Cole Jacobsen finished with a goal each. Sophomore Jacob Dionne served the first half in net with five saves while senior Michael Brawley picked up eight saves during the second half.
Southern New Hampshire started on a 3-0 run by 6:13 of the first quarter, as Calkins assisted Schutz on two of the goals. Goodwin got Saint Michael's on the board exactly two minutes later at 4:13 before Calkins set Gaddy up at 3:18 to sail one by Sonberg. The Penmen struck 1:07 into the second stanza when Tanner aided Cairo before Lockwood tallied back-to-back goals at 12:35 and 9:07 for the Purple Knights. Jacobsen finished off the first half at 3:43 for the visitors, giving them a 6-3 lead.
Tanner and Gaddy were the only two to score during the third quarter with Tanner's goal coming at 8:59 and Gaddy's with only five seconds left. After Liu scored at 14:42 of the final quarter, pushing the lead to a game-high 9-3, Lockwood registered tallies at 12:54 and again at 9:24, with Sharlow and Cotter assisting, respectively, before Murphy followed suit at 8:03 to bring the Purple Knights within 9-6. Southern New Hampshire's Tanner then went ahead and tallied at 2:30 and McGuirk finished off the scoring for the Purple and Gold with 28 seconds left.
The Purple Knights hit the road to play American International College on Friday at 4 p.m.
