COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse rising senior Neil Gallagher (Sudbury, Mass./Green Mountain Valley School) earned the first postseason award of his career this week, landing a spot on the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) All-New England second team.
Gallagher was one of six defenders from around the region to be recognized, and was among three second teamers. His selection now gives Saint Michael's 16 all-region picks in the last seven years.
One of only three Purple Knights to start all 12 games, Gallagher registered a career-high 21 caused turnovers - tied for the eighth-highest total in program history - while adding 26 ground balls. He committed just five turnovers on the season. Gallagher tied for sixth in the Northeast-10 Conference in caused turnovers, but was just two off the lead by forcing 20 during league play. Among all players in the NCAA East Region, the co-captain ranked eighth in caused turnovers per game, as well as 25th across Division II.
Gallagher turned in three ground balls and four caused turnovers against No. 2 Merrimack College on March 28 before collecting seven ground balls and five caused turnovers versus Assumption College, which was receiving national votes, on April 8. He added five ground balls and a caused turnover at Bentley University, which also had garnered votes toward the national poll, on April 25. Through three seasons, Gallagher is already seventh in program history with 39 career caused turnovers, with 38 coming as he started all 26 games the last two years.
