Men's lacrosse grabs early lead, knocks off Assumption in NE-10 play

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team rushed out to a 10-1 lead 3:20 into the second quarter on Saturday en route to a 16-7 victory against Assumption College on Duffy Field during Northeast-10 Conference play. The Purple Knights, who are receiving votes toward this week's United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) national poll, improved to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in the league, while the Greyhounds slipped to 0-7 and 0-5.

Senior Max Zuccarini (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) notched career highs with seven points, four goals and three assists for the Purple Knights, while classmate Marty Vanzo (Westford, Vt./Essex/Vermont) matches a season high with four tallies. Senior D.J. Dauria (Sherborn, Mass./Dover-Sherborn) turned in his second hat trick in three games, notching three goals and a helper, while classmate Pete Donnally (Madison, N.J./Morristown-Beard School) tacked on two goals.

Senior Christian Cook (South Burlington, Vt./New Hampton School) scored and scooped up five ground balls, classmate Liam Pushee (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) recorded four caused turnovers and five ground balls, and junior Cooper Quenneville (Shoreham, Vt./Gould Academy) turned in a pair of assists. Classmate Chris Casserly (Kensington, N.H./Exeter) was 8-of-12 on draws, and junior Chris DeMairo (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) made two saves during the opening half for the win. Classmate Andrew Landers (Manchester, Mass./Proctor Academy) had six in the second half.

Senior Casey Marren (Derby, Conn./Notre Dame) had a hat trick off the bench for Assumption, while four others scored once. Junior Ian Mack (Avon, Conn./Avon) turned in two assists, and sophomore Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) had 14 stops in 56:53 of action.

Dauria assisted Zuccarini 2:40 into the game before scoring a goal of his own 2:32 later to make it 2-0 before Assumption cut its deficit in half at 7:39 of the opening quarter. From there, the Purple Knights scored 10 straight goals, including forging a 10-1 advantage when Vanzo converted junior Tim McDonald's (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) pass with 11:40 remaining in the second quarter. Vanzo capped the run at 12:56 of the third, providing an 11-goal cushion, before Assumption scored six of the game's final 10 goals.

The Purple Knights hit the road for their next two games, beginning on Tuesday at Bentley University at 7 p.m.
