Donnally and Vanzo reach milestones in Purple Knights' first NE-10 win over Saint Rose
COLCHESTER, Vt. - Seniors Pete Donnally (Madison, N.J./Morristown-Beard School) and Marty Vanzo (Westford, Vt./Essex/Vermont) reached career milestones on Saturday, helping the nationally-ranked Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team grab a 21-4 Northeast-10 Conference win over The College of Saint Rose on Saturday at Duffy Field. Donnally became the program's career goals leader with 110, while Vanzo became the 21st Purple Knight to eclipse 100 career points, and just the second non-four-year player to do so.
The Purple Knights, who are ranked 12th in the current United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association's (USILA) national poll, improve to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the league, while the Golden Knights drop to 1-5 and 1-1.
Donnally totaled seven goals and two assists for the Purple Knights, passing Greg Lazarus '08 (109) and Saint Michael's Hall of Famers Rick Saba '92 (109) and Ray Roch '87 (107) on the program's career goals list. Vanzo notched three goals and four assists to reach 102 career points, while senior D.J. Dauria (Sherborn, Mass./Dover-Sherborn) and junior Evan Antolino (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) each posted their first career hat trick. Six other players had at least one point, and sophomore Matt Casella (Yonkers, N.Y./Fordham Prep) went 9-for-11 on face-offs. Junior Chris DeMairo (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) made three saves, and classmate Andrew Landers (Manchester, Mass./Proctor Academy) appeared in 22:53 minutes of action before first-year T.J. Bicknell (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) stopped one shot in the final 7:07.
First-year Justin Golec (Northampton, Mass./Northampton) netted a pair of goals for Saint Rose, while sophomore Kris Miller (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) picked up a goal and two assists. Junior Brett McAuliffe (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) scored once, and sophomore Ryan McFee (Greenwich, N.Y./Greenwich) was 9-for-15 on face-offs. Junior Nick Longo (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) made 11 saves before sophomore Jeff Calles (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) made two in 14:50 of playing time.
Vanzo had two goals and two assists during the hosts' 10-0 run to begin the game before each team netted two more goals in the second quarter's final 7:18. Saint Michael's scored eight consecutive goals during a 17:31 span in the second and third quarters to stretch its advantage to 19-2. Vanzo notched his 100th point while assisting a Donnally goal 4:08 into the third period, and Donnally netted his 110th marker with 36 seconds ticks remaining in the frame. Each team scored twice in the fourth quarter.
The Purple Knights are back in action on Tuesday when they face Southern New Hampshire University in a 7 p.m. road contest.
