COLCHESTER, Vt. ? Third-ranked New York Institute of Technology scored five unanswered goals in the third period to erase a halftime deficit and hold off 10th-ranked Saint Michael's College, 11-10, in men's lacrosse action on Sunday on Duffy Field at Doc Jacobs Complex.
For NYIT (2-0), junior Keith Henderson (Port Jeff Station, N.Y.) netted seven goals, including the game-winner with 3:13 left in regulation which snapped a 10-all tie. Classmate Matt Messina (Sayville, N.Y.) added a goal and three assists for the Bears, while freshman Ryan Amengual (West Babylon, N.Y.) recorded a goal and an assist. Senior Paul Flowers (Manchester, England) and sophomore Austin Carino (Huntington, N.Y.) also scored for the visitors, junior Kevin Hennessy (West Babylon, N.Y.) handed out three assists, and senior Dave Saccente (Lake Grove, N.Y.) and junior Chris Powers (Salt Lake City, Utah) combined for 11 saves, with Powers stopping eight shots to earn the win.
For Saint Michael's (0-1), junior Bryan Zaremba (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) scored four goals, while senior Mike Boerma (Concord, Mass./Lawrence Academy) added three goals and three assists. Senior Greg Lazarus (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) contributed two goals and one assist, junior Jake Previte (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset) notched a goal and an assist, and senior Jeff Hannon (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) turned aside 17 shots in the season-opener for the Purple Knights.
Saint Michael's held a slim 6-5 lead at halftime, but NYIT took control in the third quarter, as the Bears outscored the Purple Knights 5-0 in the period to lead, 10-6, after three quarters. Saint Michael's rallied, however, for four unanswered goals of its own, and tied the score at 10-all with 4:11 to go on Zaremba's fourth goal of the game. That set the stage for Henderson, who converted on a man-up goal less than a minute later, and the Purple Knights could not get a shot on goal for the remainder of the contest.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. home contest versus Molloy College. NYIT also returns to action on Saturday at 1 p.m., visiting Saint Anselm College.
