#10 Men's Lacrosse Opens Season Sunday With Showdown Against #3 NYIT

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team, ranked 10th in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) 2008 Coaches Preseason Poll, opens the 2008 spring sports season on Sunday, as the Purple Knights host third-ranked New York Institute of Technology at 1 p.m. on Duffy Field at Doc Jacobs Complex.

Sunday's game marks the earliest home start to the spring sports season in Saint Michael's history. It also is the earliest start to the season for the men's lacrosse program since opening the 2003 season at Molloy College on Feb. 25.

The Purple Knights, picked to finish third in the Northeast-10 Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, return the top eight scorers and leading goaltender from last year's squad that went 9-7 and advanced to the NE-10 Semifinals. Saint Michael's is led by senior captains Mark Agostinelli (Dedham, Mass./Xaverian Brothers), Mike Boerma (Concord, Mass./Lawrence Academy), Jeff Hannon (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional), and Kevin Simmons (Ridgewood, N.J./Don Bosco Prep).

NYIT, based out of Old Westbury, N.Y., opened its season with a 16-8 win versus Wingate University of Sunday.

After Sunday's contest, Saint Michael's returns to action on March 8 with a 1 p.m. home contest versus Molloy.
